Find Ancestors

I had had great trouble finding the birth certificate of my great Grandfather Arthur Holland born in Deptford. Parents Alfred and Matilda
He had many brothers and sisters. Matilda b1869, Louisa b1871, Alfred b1873, Ada b1875, Rosina b1877, ARTHUR b1879, Ernest b1883, Minnie b1884, Edgar b1887 and Leopold 1891.
I eventually got a birth cert for Louisa b1869 and her mother was listed as Matilda Barrett. (I posted previously in 2011 seeking info on Matilda Barrett)
Today I received a birth cert for the elusive Arthur Holland who was born 25/5/1879 at 8 Ship Street, Deptford, Kent. Mothers name Matilda FORMAN.
I know this to be the correct Arthur as the family was still living in 8 Ship St in 1881.
I am confused. Do you think there was two Matildas? What other reason would she change her maiden name.
Alfred Holland m Matilda Forman in 1881.
Is there any way I can check online or will I need to start buying some of the other childrens certs.
I would be grateful for a steer in the right direction

If Arthur didnt marry till 1881 what was his marital status on the cert

Matilda on both the 71 and 81 census was born 1848, Cambridge, Kent. Got to be the same Matilda?

Sorry Gins - today I have just discovered that Alfred either married 2 Matildas or one Matilda who changed her name.
I would think I have to start paying to get the other childrens birth certs to see when this changed. I have checked for a death cert for 1st Matilda Barrett Holland but have not found one.
I suppose I am hoping for a cheaper alternative lol

I think you need the marriage cert. looks like she could have been married before

Hey Margee that is why I have been wondering if there is only one Matilda. I thought perhaps she was married to Barrett then when he died or whatever she went back to her maiden name Forman?

in 1901 his wife is listed as Harriet !!

When Matilda died he remarried to Harriett

There's no marriage on FreeBMD for Alfred Holland & Matilda Barrett.

another scenario is she was illegitimate born as Forman but then her mum married a Barratt so was also known as that name

Keep wondering if Barrett could be Bennett
