Looking for info regarding Janet Maclaren, who lived and worked in Callander. Daughter of Duncan and Ann, duncan a schoolteacher. Janet married John Mackenzie (widower)of Uig Skye in 1906 and died in Stirling in 1932

26/07/1906 at Salutation Hotel, Perth.
John MacKenzie, inspector of Poor and School board clerk, widower, age 56, of Woodbine, Snizort, Isle of Skye, parents William MacKenzie, head gamekeeper, deceased, and Margaret MacKenzie ms Gordon, deceased.

Janet MacLaren, hotel manager, spinster, age 44, of Ellengowan, Callander, parents Duncan MacLaren, teacher, deceased, and Janet MacLaren ms Paterson, deceased.


Janet's birth is difficult - there were 13 Janet MacLaren births in Perthshire 1860-64 - and no guarantee she was born in Perthshire in any case.

I can't find her (so far) in 1871 with parents Duncan and Janet.
Can't see her with John in 1911, either.

This is the only marriage between a Duncan MacLaren and a J Paterson (or variation of spellings), anywhere in Scotland 1855 - 1863. Jessie is often an alternative to Janet:

She's 22, born Stirling, parents Charles and Jane.

Janet Maclaren was born in Canada - not too sure why or when. She is listed as living in 1901 at The Parsonage Callander aged 42 and married my gt gt grandfather from Uig Skye in 1906. She went there after marriage to raise his family. She left Skye sometime after 1911 census. Her step daughters Isabella May married in Perth in 1911 and Catherine in Uig in 1911. Margaret and Johanna also left for work. Stepson William Archibald Gillies was killed in action WW1 and she raised her youngest stepson in Stirling, putting him to Maclaren High School. She died in Stirling. Family are wondering how she and widower Gt Gt Grandfather John Mackenzie managed to meet and why she relocated from family home. Hoping to trace relatives in the area. Love to see what this remarkable woman looked like and get more details of her life.

Edit: Not sure about this as a child in the same grave Charles, died in 1860, cant be the one on the 1861 census above

I think the infant in 1861 is Robert in 1871.
But she could also have had Charles, who wouldn't appear on any census.

If the marriage I posted at 14:29 is the correct one, her father's name was Charles.
And they already had Finlay - Duncan's father's name.
