Hello Kerryn, you don't need to know the reference number in advance.
Go to Victoria BMD http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/home/family+history/search+your+family+history/
and search the historical indexes for James Sim's marriage, you have to enter your card details to view the results but once you've found it you can download the image straight away. You can decide whether you want a formal certificate $30.20 or an uncertified image $20. The latter contains all the info you need for family research.
EDIT: Cherilyn had previously given the link.

When ever you are unsure of where a registration district is, click on the district name on the Freebmd search result.
In this instance, the following window opens
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/districts.pl?r=157948234&d=bmd_1399917892
There is then a further (blue, underlined, word) link within the text which takes you to a list of Parishes covered by the District, and details of boundary changes.
To find out where a place is, use Google maps or a similar mapping site. Use the 'get directions' function to get an idea of the distance between 2 known places.
We'd have to do the same if the places were in an unfamiliar area/country/region!

Thanks for that, yes I am pretty sure that is the correct person, No I don't know where they are as my dad didn't know they existed until he finally got a full birth cert himself and by that time he was already old and my gp's had died so no one to ask. This is what started me on my research and I have actually never found any of them - in 6 yrs of research It does't help that I am in Australila, If I was in England I could start knocking on doors Thanks Kerryn

Marriages Jun 1923 (>99%) Sim Eleanor Thomas Bootle 10b 1425 Thomas John F Sim Bootle 10b 1425
Do you know if they stayed in the area? Use http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl to look for Thomas/Sim births. There are 4 shown within the search parameters 1923-1950, but only the certificate would confirm their parents.

The above gives details to be expected on Australian BMD certs. Mind you, the information is only as true as the informants knowledge (or what they want people to think)

The Sim/Pugh marriage was in Bucklow not Salford
Q4 1921 - would make him 17 years old....

You need to buy the marriage cert for James to Mary Pugh which should list ages and both brides and grooms fathers names and occupation if known
Only buy certs from the GRO they cost £9.25 including P&P
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
I have never seen an ozzy marriage cert but i doubt it will list children,
If you edit/add to your thread title to include the word "Australia" it may attract members with the knowledge and resources to help

thank you so much for all of the above, all these records are correct, I now have another huge question regarding the same family but concerning the son
Sorry if I am going to confuse anyone but I am really trying to get my head around this.
James Sim (Snr) born 1882 south shields Son of George and Jane Sim married Eleanor Bates had 3 children, eleanor died in 1913
Eleanor 1900 Lancashire (don't know death), Married John Thomas in Lancashire in 1923 have 2 possible children for her but cannot confirm any ??
Annie 1902 Lancashire married Eric Power 1926 died 1967 had daughter Patricia who born and died 1928
James 1904 Lancashire. Some trees say he married May Pugh in 1921 in Salford, these trees also say he had 2 children but I cannot confirm them. But...
James Sim Snr met Beatrice who had 3 children and decided to emmigrate to Australia (see last post) and marry Beatrice in Australia in 1927.
He traveled to Australia to have a look around (this record below) but according to these records James Sim Jr 1904 went along as well.
Find My Past image: says Mr Jas Sim age 51 and Jas Sim Junr age 19 both of 4 Mona Terrace, Aston on Mersey departed on the 'Osterley' bound for Melbourne Australia on 20 July 1923.
I have found James sim snr returning to UK -probably to organise Beatrice who was now pregnant with another son called George James born 1925 in Manchester (know as James again)and then James Sim snr travelled back to Australia in 1924 on the Morton Bay. Beatrice and family followed a year later
Questions I am asking
Did James Sim 1904 son of James Sim snr and Eleanor Bates marry May Pugh?
If James Sim 1904 travelled to Victoria Australia in 1923 with his father like the ship record shows what happened to him. Did he return to England? Did he die? Did he settle anywhere in Australia?
If I purchased James and Beatrice marriage cert would it tell me about his children? Can anyone tell me the relevant numbers for the victorian marriage Certificate?
I hope I haven't confused anyone too much
Thanks for any help
Kerryn
