I am at a standstill with the above George. Gleaned from census info his birthplace appears to be Chorlton, Manchester and his year of birth 1875. The first sighting I have found of him is on 1881 census aged 6 when he is at Industrial School, Swinton which I believe to be a workhouse. No other family member appears to be with him. I wondered whether he was there through illness or was an orphan. On 1891 census aged 15 he looks to be a tailor's apprentice residing 33 St. Michael's Hill, Bristol (the home of a Mr/Mrs. Stagg) which struck me as very odd being some considerable distance away from Manchester. 1901 - yet again as a boarder aged 25 and now the opposite end of the country Haverton Hill, Durham - a driller in ? works. In 1900 he maried Clara Prestbury(sometimes spelled presbury) at St. Wergburgh's Derby, yet another location. This I know to be correct as the family then settled in Derby for the next thirty odd years and more. I have tried to find a baptism for George in order to find his parents who could possibly be Thomas and Mary Ann but I am not sure and have no confirmation of this. Has anyone any suggestions as to where I go next other than purchasing the marr cert for George and Clara which I prefer not to do at the moment, funds being rather short for luxuries !!! Thank you for reading. |

Another record for the marriage, which gives his father's name - do you have the cert for his father's occupation: |

No sorry Potty the information I posted is all I have. If push comes to shove I will have to buy the cert if not doing so prevents me getting further back. I did try looking for a Thomas Brindley on 1871 census (possibl;y with a wife Mary Ann) but as I had no idea if George Henry had siblings or not and whether in fact his father was already married in 1871, it was a thankless task. |

Gosh you can find info quicker than I can type a reply. Thank you for the aboive replies which confirms my Thomas/Mary Ann supposition. What a shame the other children were'nt born by 1871 - it would have opened the way for progress. I shall now have to search for a marriage somewhere around 1869 onwards and hope it was the same area. Thank you all |

On the 1901 census it looks like his occupation is Driller at clinder works. It has Master written over the top. |

Oh gosh Mike - good work spotting that ! Looking at the first mariage - Mary Moulton 1868, am thinking Thomas probably born 1840's so will scratch around and see what I can find. Thanks so much for your input. |

You really would be better getting George's birth cert to confirm mother's maiden name first. |
