Going back to the cost of certificates, you can now download birth and death certs as a PDF from the GRO. They cost £6 and arrive in about three days. They're just the same certs but can't be used for legal purposes.

I'm 71 today. 1921 census may help me in my research, waiting that long I may be dead, so in my opinion bring it on, rightly or wrongly

According to National Archives there is NO CHANCE that the 1921 will be released early.
The work to digitise and publish the 1921 was put out to tender on 12 January 2018 with a closing date of 8th February. The work is expected to commence on 30 May 2018 and last unti 30 May 2028

I would love to see the 1921 census...it might unlock a mystery I have that is VERY time specific.

But the 100 year rule was made and promised, and if overturned, it would be hypocrisy.

God willing, I'll still be here in 1921 and still ploughing away at the past :-)

Noreen, did you see the date on here and that the petition closed years ago?

The census will not be opened, nor should it be. A promise is a promise.

In any case most of the people who will show on it are already either on the 1911 or 1939 Register which has been released since this petition/thread was started.

If I am not around to see it, so be it. I suspect that it won't be the last thing I think about before I kick the bucket.

There's the part of me that would like to see it to fill in some gaps ...

BUT the line has to be drawn somewhere, apart from privacy issues (although I don't buy into the argument about people finding stuff they wouldn't like - tough!) there is the cost - and I don't mean the cost of paying to view it, I mean the cost of making it available. There is a huge administrative cost in making the records available - who do they think is going to fund that? It would be the taxpayer - there are way more important demands on the public purse.

It's just a hobby, not the be all and end all. Annoys me too when people say they have "a right" to see the info and that BMD certificates should be free - get a life!

1: The law would have to be changed for the release of the 1921 census. I am sure our Government has far more pressing issues to deal with than our hobby.

2: The GRO is self funding, so the price of certificates (which are not there just for our benefit) covers all admin costs. If you want cheaper certificates, it would mean a longer wait as the GRO would have to cut staff.

Total to date is 5,162

You need 100,000 signatures, Just for it to be "considered" for debate in the House of Commons

And less than 3 month to achieve that number

Well Reggie, we are all entitled to our own viewpoint and i have signed the petition along with thousands of other people.

i have children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.. i am quite sure if they asked me about something i promised to keep secret all those years ago i would break the promise in order to enlighten them .I am quite sure that my deceased parents would also willingly give permission for their details to be released...if requested.

Our privacy laws are a little odd and conflicting. As you say Vanessa, BMD certs are freely available!

I appreciate the 100 year ruling but, couldn't they block out the children's details on the census, if they released it early?

After all, the children are easily found on freebmd using the mothers maiden name

I have mixed feelings - the 1921 will contain details of lots of people who are no longer with us (plus it would be useful to my research), but I agree it was completed with the 100 year rule. That said, however, anyone can find my birth registration on FreeBMD and order a copy for the purpose of identity theft.............which is worse?????
