I am no nearer resolving the birth of Maria Trollop but thought I would post this.
On Saturday - on a whim - we went to Wincanton races and stayed the night in Wincanton. Being only 20 miles from Trowbridge, we went there on Sunday. Followed my nose and found St James where most of my ancestors were married or christened. Saw where they lived in 1841 and 1851.
Would have liked to have visited the cemetery but it was cold and wet and I wanted to get home!
But got some lovely photos and put some geography into perspective :-)

Yes I have been through all the 1851 censuses for the siblings to no avail whatsoever!
Currently working on Elizabeth Slade who died as Frost but this was her second marriage.....
I keep wondering if Selina was in Australia until after 1851....oh for a time machine :-)

Well this is interesting..
Harriett went out "under protection of her brother-in-law and sister, John and Selina White and arrived 10 January 1842
On same vessel was Walter Kington born Trowbridge.
Later that year they married.
They are back in England by time of 1861 census.

Yes just found a few interesting titbits on FHS....Joseph and his wife and 7 month old son went to Australia as Bounty immigrants accompanied by Melissa Dorcas in 1840. And Harriet accompanied by Selina and John White in 1842
So perhaps I should look for Selina coming back alone??

Well Selina's will finally came! I am not sure there was not bad feeling between her and James and Maria's children as there is absolutely no mention of the children in her will! They were of course well catered for in James' will.
Anyway it clears up a lot about her family......
Going back first to James' will there were originally two executors; John Phillips, tailor, who we have already established was the husband of Selina's sister Ellen Norah. The second executor was John Newman, a clothier.
Selina's will mentions:
Her sister Ellen Norah Phillips Her late brother James Slade Her late sister Elizabeth Frost Her brother Joseph Slade Her sister Harriet Kington Her late sister Sarah Newman - guess this was John's wife Her sister Melissa Dorcas Her sister Penelope Tabor
The will was originally written in November 1883 in Trowbridge some six months after James had died.
There was a codicil dated 1895 - still in Trowbridge - because the two executors John Phillips (her brother-in-law) and Samuel Little had both died.
So I guess I have plenty of tree-filling to do!

Yeah Chris that's the death I have for James and Edward's father. A recent amendment to my tree....for a long time I thought Richard Marchant and his wife Jane Elliott were my direct line. Then I found that their son James born 1811 was not my great great grandfather (thankfully I suppose because that would have made him 14 when he married)....and so it turned out that Richard's sister Ann was my James' mother...and she married another Marchant - John born Frome...Ancestors didn't make it easy did they? :-)

TS..yes I have most of this...including the brothers' bankruptcy :-( Though I didn't have the newspaper bit about Grace's death.
I have actually sent for Selina's will and they have cashed the cheque:-)
I think it is going to be one of those when you just have to surmise....
Thus far I am with Joonie....
In 1851 they were all in Trowbridge.
By 1861, three daughters had moved to Cardiff. Sarah must have moved there with her husband....Maria must have moved there in time to meet, court and marry my great grandfather in 1861.
Now whether they followed James or he followed them, with a sick wife in tow I don't know. But in February 1859 Maria senior died and they were living in Cardiff and by November he had married another woman from Trowbridge. So common sense says he knew Selina before they moved to Cardiff.
As for her...I don't know where Perkins comes from....
the first 1841 is Edward Ames I think...they were all from Trowbridge.
Can't wait for the will to come to see if any of the money went back to the Marchant children

figuring out whether John White died ... seems pretty hopeless
there are 3 John White deaths in Melksham in the 1840s alone
Selina may have partnered with a Perkins after marrying White and used the name Perkins and so married James under that name, but never actually been married to a Perkins ...
but she still oughter be somewhere in 51 and 61 !!

Well Chris that's the line I have been following...
This is what I believe is father James and mother Sarah in 1841
Name: James Slade Age: 60 Estimated birth year: abt 1781 Gender: Male Where born: Wiltshire, England Civil Parish: Trowbridge Hundred: Melksham County/Island: Wiltshire Country: England Street address:
Occupation:

The two people below them are
Name: John White Age: 25 Estimated birth year: abt 1816 Gender: Male Where born: Wiltshire, England Civil Parish: Trowbridge Hundred: Melksham County/Island: Wiltshire Country: England Street address:
Occupation:
View image Registration district: Melksham Sub-registration district: Trowbridge Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 1182 Book: 10 Folio: 32 Page Number: 16 Household Members: Name Age John White 25 Selina White 20
This establishes the link to John Phillips...
spouse: Elleanora Slade Name John Phillips Birth Date Birthplace Age Spouse's Name Elleanora Slade Spouse's Birth Date Spouse's Birthplace Spouse's Age Event Date 12 Apr 1837 Event Place Trowbridge,Wiltshire,England
and Sarah the boarder in 1861 is Selina and Elleneora's mother who had been widowed in late 1851.
BUT...I can't find Selina as White in 1851; I can't find a marriage to Perkins between 11 April 1840 whether as Slade or White or anything else come to that!
