William/Margaret did not have any children on 1911 census, but it looks like 2 were born before Ellen - Robert 1913 & William 1914. Then there was a gap to Ellen, it could indicate he wasn't around - was like you say at war - hence no children in between, and there were none after Ellen. |

flip...I have Robert and ellen I don't have the William 1914.... where did u find that?????... I will look now as well.. that name would also fit in with my dad's very vague family history memories... |

Has your dad any memories of Robert & William that may lead to their marriages/children? - it's just with them being older than Ellen they may have spoken to their descendants about their father. Trouble is, their names are too common to trace any subsequent families with any certainty unless your dad can give you more on them. |

I just looked into the William Dixon that died in the war.. service number 37097.. definitely not my William... this one was born in barrow in furness which is near Carlisle......so we are back at the beginning again.... |

I used war forces.. using the service number that Shirley provided.. it shows where born and where lived.. l looked up barrow in furness cause I didn't know where that was.... |

Strange co-incidence, I'm from Barrow and it's not really very near Carlisle. Back then they were in 2 different counties - Carlisle was in Cumberland and Barrow was in Lancashire! |
