If anyone can suggest additional resources to help me in my quest to definitely identify my gg grandmother and her ancestors I would be most appreciative. Those resources would have to be available online as I live in Australia. I have researched using all the obvious ones, like FreeReg etc., but have got stuck.
I think I found her baptismal record as for Mary Ann Walter_ baptised 11 Mar 1821 in Batcombe Somerset. Her father is given as Richard occupation cordwainer and mother as Ann.
But I can find no trace of her parents or whether she had other siblings.
So if there are sources out there that I have been unable to find that may be helpful I would really appreciate it if any of you experts could suggest them to me.
Thanks and Happy New Year to everyone.
John

Thanks for your help and interest Jax.
I got her father and mothers' names from her baptismal record.
Ann, as far as I know did not marry and she had two sons, William and Alfred. I think I found her in the 1841 census in Bristol living with a family called Bailey who I think owned a pub.
I found her son William as he enlisted in the Grenadier Guards and I got info from the regiment's archivist who was very helpful. But William enlisted in Cork which makes me think that Ann and her sons went to Ireland which is why they vanish from the census records. Mrs Bailey was from Ireland, maybe that is the connection.
It is very frustrating!
Cheers

John, in order to help - and to confirm whether there is any chance of the baptismal record being the correct one - we need to know how you get back to her

Hey Jude
Simply searching the baptismal records until I found one that looked as though it could apply and did not contradict the info I was relying on, which was her son William's marriage certificate.
He stated that his father was Richard Walters a cordwainer and was deceased.
Because his mother was unmarried I wondered if he was in fact referring to his grandfather and not wishing to disclose that his mother was unmarried. As she was in Ireland (presumably) that was a good excuse for her not to go to his wedding.
Cheers,
John

How certain are you that the marriage cert for William is for a son of Ann?
Is he your proven direct line?

As you appear to have access to census records, have you tried looking for Richard?
On which site did you find Mary's baptism?

HI Reggie
I am not CERTAIN of any of the things. It just seems to me that from my researches that none of the information I found contradicted any of the other information.
Yes, I tried looking for Richard in the census records but found nothing that could be definitely him.
I found ANN's baptism on FreeReg.
Cheers

Couple of questions John..
How do you know that the William Walters that married Lucy Puttock is the son of Ann?
When did he enlist with the Grenadiers in Cork?

On your other thread it was said that the 1841 census says born' in the county' which would mean Gloucestershire NOT Somerset
There is no where on that page where Somerset is mentioned (apart from transcription on FMP and I guess Genes) so it must be a mistake it does not say Somerset on Ancestry....They did not ask Where...just Yes, No or Scotland, Ireland or Foreign parts
I see I also replied two years ago giving the 1841 census and Alfreds possible birth reg, but you never returned to that one

If that is your tree on Ancestry you have William born 1836 somerset... marrying 1859 London and dying 1861 somewhere?
Have you found him on any census apart from 1841 that says Gloucestershire?....how do you know he was born Somerset and how do you know the William who joined the army in Ireland is your William
Also the marriage for William and Lucy states father Richard Walters Shoe maker...no mention of him being dec'd (but of course he could be)

Can someone enlighten me? So are we saying that William's mother was NOT Ann but more likely Hannah?
And there were all these likely children..
WALTER, Richard M 15 1826 Somerset WALTER, Jane F 13 1828 Somerset WALTER, Ellen F 10 1831 Somerset WALTER, Clara F 9 1832 Somerset WALTER, George M 7 1834 Somerset WALTER, William M 4 1837 Somerset plus Frederick
And this is likely Hannah's death
First name(s): Hannah Last name: WALTER Date of burial 23 Aug 1841 Age at death: 46 Calculated year of birth: 1795 Place of burial Batcombe Dedication: Blessed Virgin Mary County: Somerset
