wow,
I can not believe the amount or the speed of the information, its no wonder I couldn't find these relatives easily.

The only strange piece of information my father has about his family is that the name was changed to Lester because it was easier to spell?? haven't found out anything about this but it probably comes from James and Adelaide's dubious lives

thank you everyone for your help

In James Fredrick's WW1 pension records, dated 1914, it states his parents are James and Adelaide Lester of 54 Donegal St, Pentonville Rd, London.

I don't think this is the Sarah Ann Lester living with our James in 1911

Sarah Ann Lester
Jul-Aug-Sep 1863
Islington

The Sarah Ann and daughter Caroline living with James would not be Lesters at all, they would be a woman and her daughter either by a previous marriage of Sarah Ann's or to Sarah Ann as a single woman.

The 1911 says Sarah Ann was born in Hackney and Caroline in Bethnal Green.

and I do really doubt that Richard was a Lester. He partnered up with a woman and her children all named Lester and used their name for propriety, I imagine, since it would likely have been easier by that point for him to do it than for them.

'In 1926 and 1929 she is living with Richard Lester at 140 Bemeuton Stkeet- London E
1928 with Richard and a George Lester ( who is he) ?????'

He would be the son in the 1911 census I posted, living with grandmother and brother James Frederick:

Adelaide Daniels 68 widow housekeeper
Frederick Lester 14 grandchild
George Lester 9 grandchild visitor
- born Kentish Town, Middlesex (not Kent as Ancestry foolishly says)

but the question is, who the heck is Richard Lester ?????

Obviously (if it is our James) James and Sarah Ann told fibs about being married in 1911

Probably the James George Lester whose probate that is, is this one:

Births Jun 1872
LESTER James George Mile End 1c 586

and this is his marriage

Marriages Sep 1898
Cass Emily Louise
Lester James George Whitechapel 1c 517

whereas ours appears to be this one, from census records

Births Sep 1872
LESTER James Islington 1b 343

I think Maddie has our man in 1911

LESTER, James Head Married M 41 1870 Cabinet Maker Islington London

and whoever Richard was, living with Adelaide, he was not a Lester. :-)

I would imagine that Adelaide's death would be recorded under that Richard's surname, if he was her partner until her death.

edit - I lost my marbles there again I think ... somewhere along the way I seem to have decided that the name was Lister rather than Lester and I think I searched for that ... of course her death is as posted below :-)

Maddie

I saw that one last night but wasn't sure if to post, just came back and you have done....great minds...

It states on James's British Army WW1 pension records, dated 1902 "legally separated from wife" listed as single.

On the 25th April 1902 and for the12 months prior, James was residing at 398 Hackney Rd, Bethnal Green, according to WW1 records

He states NO children under the age of 14yrs !!!!

His father James lives at 28 Meadows Dwellings, Bethnal Green

if the tree on ancestry is correct he was legally separated from Adelaide in 1902

I'm probably barking up the wrong tree

the George in 1911 posted by JoonieCloonie was in the Duke of Welliington Regiment 2nd battalion, so probably not him

If he was still wanting to call himself George I wonder whether this was him

MILITARY
LISTER GEORGE 1873 38 Andover Hampshire

I don't pay for details at the 1911census site and I can't find that person at Ancestry so far to see details.

edit, looks like not

Name: George Lister
Age in 1911: 38
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873

Civil Parish: South Tidworth
County/Island: Hampshire
Street Address: Candahar Military Barracks, Candahar Barracks, South Tedworth, Hants
Marital Status: Married
Occupation: Soldier

Registration District: Andover

The info that Maddie quoted says this about Adelaide Daniels Lester

Address
1911 Age: 38
32 Cumberland St
with Florrie 5 and Rosie13

but ...............

this is the household at 32 Cumberland St, Islington

Richard Lester 44 (abt 1867), horsekeeper, born Richmond Surrey
Adelaide Lester 31 (not 38, very clear) born Essex
Rosie Lester 13
Florrie Lester 5

however ... it says married 18 years, 5 children born, 5 living ... and that would likely fit Adelaide Daniels Lester. And there is no Richard Lester marriage to an Adelaide. And I can't see a birth to fit him.

Did Adelaide change partners regularly and give them all her surname? :-)

A Richard Henry Lester did marry in Bethnal Green in 1892, but not to an Adelaide.

There is no death or remarriage that fits Adelaide Lester after 1911.

I have seen cases in censuses of a household composed of a married woman and her children living with her new partner and the partner is recorded under their surname. I wonder whether this was the case, and possibly even in 1901 as well.
