OneFootInTheGrave Report 26 Nov 2013 13:29

Hi Potty - I discounted the marriage to Hilda because fathers name for Thomas Wotherspoon is showing as Samuel Mackay Wotherspoon and father of Thomas I am looking for is Allan Wotherspoon.

In respect of marriage date given by Mel Fairy Godmother - I am presuming that is 31/12/1912.

Regards

Jim

Thanks Catherine & Mel Fairy Godmother for the information on the Thomas Wotherspoon from his British Army WWI Service Records, much appreciated, as I have made the connection as to where he fits in my tree and I have obtained his marriage details from Scotlands People.

OneFootInTheGrave Report 29 Nov 2013 10:50

I received the death certificate for Thomas Wotherspoon this morning from GRO and it shows Thomas Wotherspoon resided at ** Stores Hall Lane, Kirkburton and that he was a chief laboratory technician, and that he died on 02/07/1967 at age 66, it shows the informant as an A. S. Wotherspoon - his son from Leeds, it does not give any details of who Thomas's parents were.

I have looked for a birth for an A. S. Wotherspoon and on Scotlands People I have found an Allan S. Wotherspoon born in the same area that Thomas lived:-

1930 WOTHERSPOON ALLAN S M LOCHORE /FIFE 408/01 0038

Think I may be on the right path here, so am I correct in saying that if I order this birth certificate from Scotlands People that it will show Allan S. Wotherspoon's parents, I ask because I have not ordered certificates before from SP.

Thanks

Potty

Potty Report 29 Nov 2013 16:02

Scottish birth certs do usually have both the parents names and also the date and place of their marriage.

Thanks Potty - I will order it and see what it reveals

Anne - thanks for your message regarding Allan S Wotherspoon, I have noted the information.

In respect of the Thomas Wotherspoon who married Maggie Watson, I have had a look at that marriage, his usual residence is given as Cocklaw Street in Kelty and as a widower aged 56 he married Maggie Watson aged 43 on 06/07/1922 in Dunfermline, her occupation is shown as housekeeper and her usual residence is given as Forth View Farm, Standrigg, Polmomt.

That Thomas Wotherspoon was born 07/05/1866 in New Monkland middle district to Thomas Wotherspoon and Janet Reid - he may be connected in some way as I know my mother had family in Kelty but I will need to do some further research on his parents.

Why did there have to be so many Wotherspoon's :-S

Well you seem to be getting somewhere now. They say seek and ye shall find!

Mel Fairy Godmother - when I seem to be getting somewhere with the Wotherspoon side of my family I end up in a one step forward two steps backwards scenario :-(

I would love to be able to spend a few days at, Register House in Edinburgh and the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, researching the connection between, the Wotherspoon's from the Old Monkland & Bellshill areas and the Wotherspoons who moved from those areas to Fife.

Alas old age and health problems rule that out, however as I have said before I have nothing but praise and gratitude for the help and leads the volunteers on here have given me, thanks to them I have grown my tree substantially since I joined last year :-)

Received the birth certificate this morning for Allan S. Wotherspoon born 1930 at Lochore in Fife, from the birth certificate it appears that this is not the son of my Thomas Wotherspoon, he is the son of my Thomas Wotherspoon's brother John, the birth certificate shows John Wotherspoon as his father and Ella Laura Pink, who I know he married, as his mother)

As I said earlier, when I seem to be getting somewhere with the Wotherspoon side of my family I end up in one step forward & two steps backwards - so back to the drawing board :-(

Chris Ho :) - Thanks for those links, I am familiar with the Lochgelly site and visit it often, that said I find the memorial to Dr. Allan Stuart Wotherspoon very interesting, a lot of things in it ring bells.

I can vaguely recall my mum asking her Uncle Tam (Thomas Wotherspoon), when he came back to Ballingry for his brother, my grandfather's funeral, how Josie his wife was and how Allan was and him saying Josie was fine and that Allan was studying hard as he wanted to become a doctor.

I know Thomas Wotherspoon's worked as a laboratory technician at a hospital in the Huddersfield/Leeds area and he lived in the Stores Hall area of Kirkburton - Allan being born in Northern Ireland confuses me though.

onefoot, I just wanted to say what a lovely clear thread you have made :-D

If you are interested in contacting Thomas's son Allan's family this would probably be the right contact info

also I won't put links here but if you google
halifax wotherspoon
(or include the forename of one of the daughters named in Allan's obltuary)
you will find a professional page about a daughter named in his obituary and you can check for family likeness :-)
and a facebook page for the other daughter which links to the son's
They seem like a lovely family.

also for info this would be the death of Thomas's wife

You are very welcome and my regards to them all :-)

(and kudos to Chris Ho for finding the Canadian connection that I piggybacked on for the further searching of course!)

OneFootInTheGrave

OneFootInTheGrave Report 14 Dec 2013 10:27

Update - I obtained a copy of the death certificate for the Josephine Wotherspoon
Birth Date: 27 Apr 1907 above and this confirms that this was the wife of Thomas Wotherspoon a hospital laboratory technician - her maiden name was Josephine Moore and she was born 27 April 1907 in Belfast Co. Antrim and shows her occupation as a hospital domestic (Retired).

I am still waiting to hear back from the the daughter of their son that I contacted in Canada, in the meantime I will need to see if I can track down the marriage of Thomas & Josephine which could have taken place in Ireland, Scotland, or England :-(

OneFootInTheGrave

OneFootInTheGrave Report 21 Dec 2013 12:20

Update - I have not received any information back from the the daughter of the son of Thomas Wotherspoon and Josephine Moore that I contacted in Canada, cannot help feel that I may have touched a nerve, as I queried if the son might have been the son of Thomas's brother and that after Thomas's brother was killed at sea, when his ship HMS Glowworm was sunk in April 1940, maybe he was adopted/brought up by Thomas & Josephine.

As to finding information on Thomas & Josephine's marriage which could have taken place in Ireland, Scotland, or England - to date I have been unable to trace any details.
