I'm a bit puzzled about something - on the 1898 marriage that Reggie posted from Lancs OPC for Alfred & Lavinia it says record type = Banns and the notes say Cancelled.

On this record it states they married by licence - does that mean that they didn't wait for the banns to be read and instead married by special licence?

Yes, Tenerife Sun, I do think the Alfred in the 1911 is Alfred jnr's father. There are a couple of hits for Sidney if you google and Ancestry has some Naval records for him - he went on to be a Lt Commander.

The only other thing I can find for Alfred Snr is a possible on New York passenger lists but I cannot view it.

I can't find anything re Harry and Lily

Just clutching at straws now but there was a Harry Clare born Newton le willows, Merseyside 1879 and a Lilian Esther Maybury born Pendleton, Salford 1873. Can't find a marriage for them but wondered if this was when the two name were put together.

Looks like Alfred never married Florence until 1943

I think Lillian Ester was Alfred snr's sister - she is on the 1881 that I posted where the family are shown as Mabury and she is living with her mother in Penge on the 1911:

Re Alfred and Sidney both lived previously with the women they married.

Just found a tree on Ancestry that has, as you say, Alfred and Lillian as siblings. Do you think that Alfred Fearon etc etc was Lilian's child and the father was Harry Clare as in the baptism details, and brought up by her brother Alfred and Elizabeth (Perkins)

I hope the posters friend gets a few certs as I'm intrigued now :-D

Yes I am intrigued too! Do hope the poster's friend buys some certs and that the poster comes back with the info.

I suppose Alfred could have been Lillian Maybury's son but that still doesn't explain why Elizabeth changed her name to Lillian in the 1911. It does look as if Alfred snr and Elizabeth split up at some time and Alfred and Frederick stayed with their mother (or at least kept up contact with her) and Sidney stayed with his father.

Also, have just noticed that on the 1911, Elizabeth/Lillian says she has had two children and yet we seem to have found 3!

Her death is registered as Elizabeth and seems to be under both Clare and Maybury-Clare:

I have seen my friend and she is going to hunt out any certs/paperwork she can find and give me copies. Unfortunately Iwon't see her again until the middle of next week, so fingers crossed she has something which will be helpful.

Just to throw my tuppence worth in...Double-barrelling names....not always a snobbish element. I truly considered double-barrelling my maiden name Llewellyn with my married name Hunt because I am an only child and none of my male cousins had children; so it meant Llewellyn dying out. But I decided against it and, as it happens, I have two daughters anyway!

And I have lost count in my family of the number of grandmother's names (for example) used as Christian names...e.g. my great grandmother was a Marchant and several of her offspring and children's offspring have Marchant as a middle name. So Lord is a good example.

I have briefly seen my friend but no progress I'm afraid. She had difficulty grasping what had been discovered and was insistent on showing me photographs of ancestral relatives whose identity she did not know ! However, she did show me a letter which she thought might interest me. It read as follows:
Dear Aunty, Thank you for the money you gave me .... etc. etc. Love from Alfie. This letter was on headed paper: H. Clare, Photographer, Portland Studio, 20 Granby Street, Leicester !!! and dated 4 July 1909

She also showed me a certificate saying that Private Alfred Clare had served in the Pembroke Yeomanry Cyclists Corps during WW1. There was a number quoted A 6 290557.

I am hoping to meet up with her again next week for a couple of hours in order to try and glean more information.

Just tried to look up 20 Granby Street Leicester in the 1911 and it's not listed!!! It goes from number 12 to number 50.

My 'guess' is that the photographer referred to is Harry Clare, as in Alfred's baptism, and the 1911 Potty found putting Alfred and his mother Lilian in Leicester is correct unfortunately it doesn't give her marital status.
