Find Ancestors

A friend wants to do her family tree and I said I would help. All she has is:

Her parents: Alfred Fearon Lord Maybury-clare and mother Irene Isobel nee Powell.

Maternal Grandparents: Richard Powell and Lavinia Emily Powell nee Donnolly..

I have scoured the internet and am getting nothing on Maybury-clare except the baptism of the abiove Alfred. It is located on Lancashire Parish Clerks project and says born October 1898, the child of Harry Maybury-clare and Lily. The baptism didn't take place until October 1929 !! however someone on Ancestry has a private tree for a Frederick Maybury-clare and I have contacted for help/info but no reply I'm afraid.

Also on Ancestry are the following deaths: Elizabeth d. 1952 regd. Barton, Lancs, the above Alfred Sept 1966, Wirral, Irene Isobel 1876 Wallasey, Fredk Victor 1992 (b 1905) Stockport and Bertha 1994(b. 1911) Stockport.

I cannot understand why this family can't be found on census returns prior to 1911.

As for the Richard Powell and wife Lavinia Emily. I have them on 1911 census which shows wife born Straffan, Dublin. I have found Richard on 1871 census which gives his father but not a thing for Lavinia Emily.

I have no idea at all which way to tread with this little lot. Looks to me like an impossible task. Anyone any brilliant idea before I pull the rest of my hair out !!! Thanks.

Have you found the first marriage for Lavinia

Look for Lavinia in Ireland in 1901

Is her father named on her marriage cert?

Is the marriage in the name of Donnolly or Conolly - looking at 1898 entry

Try looking for the right name.....................lol!

As there are no marriages for the births with MMNs Powell and Forsytg, it probably didn't take place in England or Wales

So, tying that up with the freebmd birth, the mother was Bertha Bryant.

Doubling-up a surname in that way was usually done for financial reasons

In my experience, adding another surname tended to be as a result of being promised a legacy............but that relates only to families which I have researched.

This one may be different................

There can of course be the 'snob' element to it

I used to work with a man surname Smith..............when his son went to uni, the son added a second surname.

Dad's money was good enough.........but not his name
