Cherilyn - thank you for all this information. It is most intriguing. I wish I could find some evidence of my William Addey's journey to Australia. |

Lst but not least, there is also this little tidbit, adding a bit more mystery as I can't find any trace of Phoebe, nor a marriage between Wm & Phoebe |

The story is just that Wm went to Australia - so he may have been in Victoria or another state, other than NSW? |

This may be the marriage of the Maitland convict William (or his son?) |

It is of course possible that William went to Australia as a free man in which case maybe one of the two NSW deaths is the convict and the other William. |

Thanks for all your recent replies. I agree, I don't think convict William Addey can have been my man. It is difficult when I am not sure of birth details so do not know his age, other than he was over 21 when he married in 1851. I haven't found any census information that I can be sure of. There is nothing with both him and his wife Ann (nee Freeme) on, as he married after the 1851 census was taken. I'm not even sure he went to Australia, I just have a letter from the 1940s which relates a family story. |

I don't think that your man was the convict. The age just doesn't fit. As mentioned, nobody was transported aged 9. |

Is this the William Addey (or Addy) I have been trying to trace? |

In 1851, William was 23. There is no way he could have been transported in 1837 aged 9. |

We can now get a baptism for Rosa Addy. Her father was William, a labourer of 4 Middle Row. Same parish as the other children. |

William was a Farrier at Tocal near Maitland NSW Australia. He recieved his ticket of freedom in 1843, perhaps he returned to England? |

Hi Geoff. Thanks for getting in touch. I had also found information about William Addey who was transported to Australia on The Mangles. However I discounted him because of the date. Unfortunately I have made no further progress in finding out what happened to him. |

Dear Rosemary, my name is Geoff Goodwin from Walcha NSW Australia, A few years ago while metal detecting I found a small brass disc, its about the size of a pocket watch, It has an inscription on it which reads William Addey's Sundial Maitland, I believe and am almost 100% certain this belonged to your relative William Addey, he was transported to Australia in 1837 aboard the ship The Mangles and assigned to C&F Wilson at Tocal near Maitland NSW, I have copies of his transportation details and ticket of freedom certificate. He had tattoos on his left and right arms WAMA & JATA, Please reply regards Geoff. |

Yes. I see what you mean. I'll see if I can find out more. There is a William Addey listed in the St Pancras area later in the 1800's but by then Ann was described as a Widow. If Rosa was his child it would explain a serious family disagreement! |

On Williams marriage certificate to Ann Freeme he states his occupation as a Butler..... I would consider the 1851 census that I posted maybe him seeing as the occupation is the same. |
