Hi Geoff. Thanks for getting in touch. I had also found information about William Addey who was transported to Australia on The Mangles. However I discounted him because of the date. Unfortunately I have made no further progress in finding out what happened to him.

William was a Farrier at Tocal near Maitland NSW Australia. He recieved his ticket of freedom in 1843, perhaps he returned to England?

In 1851, William was 23. There is no way he could have been transported in 1837 aged 9.

Could be his baptism:

Is this the William Addey (or Addy) I have been trying to trace?

Death announcement in The Sydney Morning Herald 21/09/1864:

WILLIAM ADDEY (also listed a second time but spelt ADDY) - died September 14th 1864 at Toll-gate, Randwick Road, (Sydney, Australia) after a long and painful illness aged ?33.

As a bit of background information, William's father (also William) spelt his surname ADDY and as far as I am aware he was the only child who took the spelling ADDEY. His siblings seem to have kept the ADDY format.

Does anyone have information about this person?

BeverleyW

BeverleyW Report 4 Feb 2015 18:53

I don't think that your man was the convict. The age just doesn't fit. As mentioned, nobody was transported aged 9.
Also consider how he would have been able to pay his fare back to the UK. Very few convicts were ever able to return.

The New South Wales death index shows two William Addey/Addys. One in 1862 and one in 1864.

Thanks for all your recent replies. I agree, I don't think convict William Addey can have been my man. It is difficult when I am not sure of birth details so do not know his age, other than he was over 21 when he married in 1851. I haven't found any census information that I can be sure of. There is nothing with both him and his wife Ann (nee Freeme) on, as he married after the 1851 census was taken. I'm not even sure he went to Australia, I just have a letter from the 1940s which relates a family story.
The following is the newspaper announcement I would like to know more about though.

The Sydney Morning Herald Wednesday 21st September 1864 page 7

BeverleyW Report 5 Feb 2015 13:07

It is of course possible that William went to Australia as a free man in which case maybe one of the two NSW deaths is the convict and the other William.

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 6 Feb 2015 02:46

Thanks Chris :-)

This is the NSW death posted earlier, gives parents names (from NSW BDMonline):
2323/1864
ADDY WILLIAM
[father] WILLIAM
[mother] MARY
PADDINGTON

This matches the parents names on the 1828 birth above that Beverley posted, which in turn fits the census info showing birthplace:
Name: William Addy
Event Type: Christening
Event Date: 10 Feb 1828
Event Place: St Peter's Church, Burnley, Lancashire, England
Gender: Male
Father's Name: William Addy
Mother's Name: Mary Addy

Note that funeral notice only invites 'friends', no family mentioned.
Friday 16 September 1864
ADDY.—The Friends of the deceased Mr. WILLIAM ADDY are invited to attend his funeral, to move from his late residence, at the Tollgate Randwick Road, THIS (Friday) AFTERNOON, at a quarter-past 3 o'clock. JAMES CURTIS, undertaker, 59, Hunter-street.

Zooming in on the death notice he was aged 33. So birth c1830. But newspapers were notoriously bad for errors on such things. So he could have been 35.

This may be the marriage of the Maitland convict William (or his son?)

Cherilyn Report 6 Feb 2015 02:51

The story is just that Wm went to Australia - so he may have been in Victoria or another state, other than NSW?

Just to throw a spanner in the works there are two more deaths:

10662/1889
ADDY WILLIAM
AGE 60 YEARS DIED WOLLONGONG
WOLLONGONG
This may be the William who was having children with a wife named Isabella in Sydney 1857-73 (no marriage found in NSW). Isabella died in 1883. See also http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article108892800 (NLA Trove)

2977/1862
ADDY WILLIAM
UNKNOWN
DIED BURRANGONG
YOUNG
I wonder if this is the one who married Helen in Maitland, as they only seem to have had the one child, a David W ADDY in 1862 (b. Maitland). Young is a long way from Maitland tho.

Soooo the 1889 death fits the timeline and agewise...and the 1864 death might also be worth a punt, given parents names seem to match. Up to you really! You can use a transcription agent for NSW deaths, just Google :)

Cherilyn - thank you for all this information. It is most intriguing. I wish I could find some evidence of my William Addey's journey to Australia.
