Hi Geoff. Thanks for getting in touch. I had also found information about William Addey who was transported to Australia on The Mangles. However I discounted him because of the date. Unfortunately I have made no further progress in finding out what happened to him.

William was a Farrier at Tocal near Maitland NSW Australia. He recieved his ticket of freedom in 1843, perhaps he returned to England?

We can now get a baptism for Rosa Addy. Her father was William, a labourer of 4 Middle Row. Same parish as the other children.

In 1851, William was 23. There is no way he could have been transported in 1837 aged 9.

Is this the William Addey (or Addy) I have been trying to trace?

Death announcement in The Sydney Morning Herald 21/09/1864:

WILLIAM ADDEY (also listed a second time but spelt ADDY) - died September 14th 1864 at Toll-gate, Randwick Road, (Sydney, Australia) after a long and painful illness aged ?33.

As a bit of background information, William's father (also William) spelt his surname ADDY and as far as I am aware he was the only child who took the spelling ADDEY. His siblings seem to have kept the ADDY format.

Does anyone have information about this person?

I don't think that your man was the convict. The age just doesn't fit. As mentioned, nobody was transported aged 9.
Also consider how he would have been able to pay his fare back to the UK. Very few convicts were ever able to return.

The New South Wales death index shows two William Addey/Addys. One in 1862 and one in 1864.

Thanks for all your recent replies. I agree, I don't think convict William Addey can have been my man. It is difficult when I am not sure of birth details so do not know his age, other than he was over 21 when he married in 1851. I haven't found any census information that I can be sure of. There is nothing with both him and his wife Ann (nee Freeme) on, as he married after the 1851 census was taken. I'm not even sure he went to Australia, I just have a letter from the 1940s which relates a family story.
The following is the newspaper announcement I would like to know more about though.

It is of course possible that William went to Australia as a free man in which case maybe one of the two NSW deaths is the convict and the other William.

This is the NSW death posted earlier, gives parents names (from NSW BDMonline):

This matches the parents names on the 1828 birth above that Beverley posted, which in turn fits the census info showing birthplace:

Zooming in on the death notice he was aged 33. So birth c1830. But newspapers were notoriously bad for errors on such things. So he could have been 35.

This may be the marriage of the Maitland convict William (or his son?)

The story is just that Wm went to Australia - so he may have been in Victoria or another state, other than NSW?

I wonder if this is the one who married Helen in Maitland, as they only seem to have had the one child, a David W ADDY in 1862 (b. Maitland). Young is a long way from Maitland tho.


Soooo the 1889 death fits the timeline and agewise...and the 1864 death might also be worth a punt, given parents names seem to match. Up to you really! You can use a transcription agent for NSW deaths, just Google :)

Lst but not least, there is also this little tidbit, adding a bit more mystery as I can't find any trace of Phoebe, nor a marriage between Wm & Phoebe
