Might this be George travelling by himself? There are no other Georkes transcribed on the manifest

GOERKE, George
Ship/aircraft name Otranto

Port of embarkation London
Port of disembarkation Sydney
Date of arrival 08 Feb 1927

From National Archives of Australia Passenger arrivals index, 1921-1949

On second thoughts perhaps not, unless he had been back to the UK for a visit. The 1925 ER find suggests he arrived before then.

Thanks Cynthia :)

Ethel's death in NSW shows her father as Samuel, so that matches:

19684/1945 GOERKE ETHEL / SAMUEL / / PADDINGTON

Paddington refers to the NSW district in which her death was registered.

Death of George found by Choccy:

Surname: OGOERK
Given Names: George
Father: Unknown
Mother: UNKNOWN
Death Place: RICH
Age: 69
Year: 1960
Reg Number: 9554
Event: D

Hilda Ethel May O'GOERK died in South Australia in 1991.

A Hilda May O'GOERK, daughter of George O'GOERK, died in Hindmarsh, SA in 1931 (note he did not marry Hilda HISCOCK until 1933!)

Son Brian Thomas 1933-2003 as found by Choccy; suspect his wife was Ethel Florence, d. 2007 SA.

There is an article in The Argus of 23 May 1942 where George O'GOERK (soldier) was charged with bigamy (so it caught up with him!). But "that O'Goerk's legal wife had written him a letter in which she expressed regret that she had been obliged to give the police his address, as she was not spiteful. The second woman said she was willing to forgive and forget the fact that she had been deceived into contracting a bigamous marriage." :-)

Also a few articles about him in SA newspapers in the 1930s, where he shows as an engineer, or a motor mechanic, and that he had been in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at some time, and in another he is stated to be an ex-navy salvage officer!

Brenda Report 1 Oct 2013 18:43

hi, sorry I said edith when I should have said ethel - what I know about the heathcotes is that my dad and his brother had half siblings, dick (Richard) lily, agnes, I never heard about ethel but that could just mean that my dad didn't mention her, dicks daughter edith is still alive and lives in Wallasey. lily married and emigrated to New York , I do remember aunty aggie, did she have a daughter Edna - I remember visiting her when we came to Liverpool - we lived in Edinburgh, my mother was Scottish and my dad moved there after the war. so my dads dad was Samual Slinger Heathcote his mothe Clarinda Morton. Samuels first wife Lydia died around 1910 - my dad was born in 1914. my brother and I spent many happy holidays in Liverpool / Birkenhead - it would be good to hear from you again - any other snippets I can supply, I will be glad to help.

hi again, well this is interesting - I remember staying at your mum Ednas house I have a picture of my dad, brother cousin tony heathcote, what on earth happened to him - the picture was taken outside the house, i remember aunty aggie being there - was your dads name bill? do you have a sister June and i thought there was a girl called Hilary - i was about 10 then - i;m 70 now - i don't feel it though - i know that Edith married for a second time - so that was to your dad - how complicated - so were half cousins, that's great - maybe ive met you, when dad went to Liverpool, we were always taken round all the relatives. we usually stayed with uncle Arthur and his wife Marie in Birkenhead. my dad hardly spoke of his dad. he kept in touch with lily who went to n York,i wonder if that was Lydia, and she was called lily. im really pleased to have found you, i was looking up Samuel when i saw your note. look foreward to hearing from you.

hi again, its good to get to know about the history of the family, Lily had a daughter called Doreen, she sent the occasional xmas card to me and when she came to uk with her husband, she paid me a visit, I think lily had died by then - I remember you sister June - are we a similar age? Hilary was younger, maybe you weren't born then - my dad kept in touch with his brother Dick and dick and his wife used to regularly come to stay with us in Edinburgh, he was a very nice man - he always sent Lily a Xmas Card and I remember when my brother an I were young, she used to send American comics - did you know my uncle Arthur? when we came to Liverpool on holidays, dad always used to take us to the beach at new brighton - I have such good memories of that time. yes, we should link trees. :
