Thanks , so do you think that the spelling of Burling as Berling twice is a double spelling mistake, should I record the mother Eliza White as her mother in my tree? |

Hi Christine, |

Marriage certificates could easily be fudged and so often the father is listed on there and his death isn't noted...... What's even worse is when they state their father is deceased and he's not!!! The joys of the game.. tee hee. :-D |

Hi just realised that I have the birth cert(it as a good few years ago, when I got it) and it shows Henry occ a' Lath' something or other(unreadable) but giving impression he is alive like the marriage cert. mother Eliza formerly White. |

Hmmmm this is getting more interesting, just found a cert that I didn't know I had, a birth cert for my Great Grandfather Frederick James/Lucas, his mother is down as Ann Lucas formerly Taylor, the Ann Taylor that married James Luckhurst......... 1 year before. and the same Frederick that married Eliza Burling/Berling in the name of Gorham. what on earth did James do to be acting so furtive????? |

So it ties in nicely then, on the marriage certificate I thought it said Lathe ????? But wasn't sure. If Henry had died prior to her birth then having a name to use for her father would be an advantage, well why be an illegitimate child if you didn't have to be and Henry couldn't argue because he most probably wasn't alive. Just my theory. :-D |

James really seems to be dodging about with his surname, I would imagine they would ALL be family names as they are quite unusual... certainly not Smiths or something as popular. More and more parish records are becoming available on line, so fingers crossed it will only be a matter of time before your queries and frustrations are answered. |

Just a thought but although Luckhurst and Lucas look very different written down they can sound very similar when you say them. |

|
Mary | Report | 2 Sep 2013 10:39 |
Apparently Luckhurst is a variation of Lucas. |

He remarried a Jane and has a stepson who I think takes the Gorham name too. they really are a strange lot. The link to Genealogy forum above from Dizzi made interesting reading. |

This is a transcription from FMP. I wonder if there's an original copy to see anywhere. The name Pookhurst could possibly be a mistransciption of Luckhurst. |
