I think the Ancestry tree has Robert and Elizabeth as the parents of John Wraight, because an adult John Wraight was baptised the same day as their son William, in 1787.

However I find it hard to believe a 10/11 yrold would be described as an adult, and I think, as he was still a minor, they would have described him as the son of Robert and Elizabeth if they were indeed his parents.

I'll try and pm you the baptism image so you can see what you think.

yes I think Winford Brown wraighte 1816 had a son Winford Brown Wraight 1857. and his brother John 1801 (both were sons of John wraight 1776 and Sarah Brown) also had a son Winford Brown Wraight 1837.

It is interesting to see Thomas Wraight 1804 parents were sarah and William on christening record (not John) - maybe it is a different Thomas Wraight

ah brill! Thanks. I think John was born in 1776 and CHRISTENED in 1784? I think the adult john christened same time as William may be a separate person/adult from a different family tree? Thomas Wraight married Anne Chittenden 1769 in Faversham, possibly Johns parents. I need to confirm if they had children and their birthdates, where is best to look? Thanks, Jane

https://familysearch.org/search

A free site I mentioned earlier, has baptisms for several children of an Ann and Thomas Wraight in Preston by Faversham in the 1770s and 1780s.

That would tie in well with the 1769 marriage you mentioned.

Both the 1776 and 1784 John Wraight events are recorded as CHRISTENINGS on family search.

I would normally assume, given that they have the same named parents, that the John born 1776 had died, and his name recycled for another child.

Neither christening gives a birth date or age, and i don't have access to images of the Preston by Faversham records. So I have no idea when the 1784 baptised John was born, and whether it was too late to be your John.

My gut feeling is that the John Wraight baptised in 1787 is NOT a child of Robert and Elizabeth, nor your John Wraight, but probably a cousin of some degree. However that is just my feeling, I can't substantiate it, other than what I said in a previous post.

I had John1781 but could be 1776 if aged 64 at 1841 census was rounded down to 60, giving a false birth year of 1781 as was same age as sarah brown, his wife, on 1841 census and ahe was christened 1776/7.
I think my john 1776 married Sarah Brown in 1799 and had 5 sons (Winford 1800 - died 1801, John 1801 - 1862 my 5G grandfather, Thomas 1804/5, George 1803/6 and Winford 1815. I think John 1776 died 1851. The other John 1784 may have been his younger brother. My Dad was emailed a hand written record of kent baptisms, marriages and deaths. In Preston/faversham 1769 Thomas wraight and Ann Chittenden married, benath their entry there were 6 wraight children baptised 1771 george + charlotte, 1776 john, 1778 william, 1784 john, 1787 elizabeth. Im not sure but only assume thomas and ann are their parents.

That tallies with family search, but you've missed one. Ann, christened in 1774:

John Wraight
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 29 September 1776 Preston-next-Faversham, Kent, England
residence: Kent, England
father: Thomas Wraight
mother: Ann Wraight

John Wraight
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 31 October 1784 Preston-next-Faversham, Kent, England
residence: Kent, England
father: Thomas Wraight
mother: Ann Wraight

William Wraight
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 22 March 1778 Preston-next-Faversham, Kent, England
residence: Kent, England
father: Thomas Wraight
mother: Ann Wraight

Ann Wraight<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 29 May 1774 Preston-next-Faversham, Kent, England
residence: Kent, England
father: Thomas Wraight
mother: Ann Wraight

Elizabeth Wraight
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 27 May 1787 Preston-next-Faversham, Kent, England
residence: Kent, England
father: Thomas Wraight
mother: Ann Wraight

George Wraight
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 13 December 1771 Preston-next-Faversham, Kent, England
residence: Kent, England
father: Thomas Wraight
mother: Anne Wraight

Charlotte Wraight
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 3 December 1771 Preston-next-Faversham, Kent, England
residence: Kent, England
father: Thomas Wraight
mother: Anne

Given that Thomas Wraight married Ann Chittenden in January 1769, it did cross my mind that this 'Wright' child below, might actually have been a misspelt Wraight, and triggered the marriage of Thomas and Ann, but of course that would be pure speculation...

Thomas Wright
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 2 April 1769 Faversham, Kent, England
residence: Faversham, Kent, England
father: Thomas Wright
mother: Anne

However parents often named a child after themselves, and there's no Thomas Wraight in the baptism list, so maybe 'Thomas Wright' is indeed a 'premature' Thomas Wraight...

As over fifteens were supposed to have their age rounded down to the nearest five years in 1841, John could have been born anywhere between 1776-1781.

I feel reasonably confident that the baptism I found for Sarah Brown, with father named Winford, is likely to be correct, given the way the names Winford and Brown crop up amongst her descendants.
