The 1861 census for James is a match, in 1851 he was in Sheffield were there was a marriage in 1852 that fits.
Did he marry Bertha Stanton? If so he seems to have settled in Sheffield, this is where Catherine Rabbit was from.
I can't see James jnr in 1881 have you found him?

Hi again, in 1881 James age 16 was living at home 28 Prince Regent St.Portsea. with his father James age 44 Shipwright and young James was a Stay Fitter. His 2 sisters Louisa age 20 and Amelia age 17. At some point he did arrive in Sheffield when and how ? he did marry Bertha and they had 8 children. one of which another James, was my Father-in-Law.
The marriage of Catherine Rabbet to the James Peters in question in Sheffield was incorrect according to the marraige cert. I had. she was born in Ireland.

Could you tell us please Kathleen what it says exactly on the marriage cert that you say is wrong?
Also-do you have James and Bertha's marriage cert? Who were the witnesses and what was James' father's occupation;

Kathleen,
If we look at the evidence you have I it's my opinion that the Sheffield family is the correct one.
You have James Peters birth cert, it states his parents names..... These tie in with the Sheffield couple. The occupation on there for his father is the same as the 1861 census for James born in Cambridge.
Your James Peters marries in Sheffield, Sheffield is a fair distance from Portsea now and we have better facilities to get there compared to in 1883. Why would a Portsea boy marry so far away??
I really think that with the correct certificates the Sheffield family will be the correct one.
