Find Ancestors

Hi - this is my first post so please forgive anything I may be doing wrong!

I have come up against a brick wall in trying to find my great grandmother. My father believes her name was Hester Withy, born around 1870 and she lived in Carlingcott which is between Bath and Bristol.

My father's details are - Michael Desmond Somerset Cormack, born 1925 and his mother's details are Lillian Chivers, born c1900 - they are both from Bath, Somerset.

Was Hester your father's grandmother on his mother's or father's side?

What was your grandfather Cormack's first name?

I can't see any trace of a marriage...........

Clare, you need to work your way back to 'Hester'. Do you know. which of your grandparents was her child?

I can't see a Chivers/Cormack marriage either, unless it was overseas or Lillian had been previously married.

Hester was my father's grandmother on his mother's side.

Afraid my father has no recollection of his grandfather on his mother's side (ie Hester's husband.)

It is odd that my father's mother - Lilian Chivers, had a different maiden name from her mother, which was supposedly Withy??

Clare, please re-track a bit! Do you have Lilian's marriage details - I am wondering if she put a name for her father?

It was YOUR grandfather whose name I asked for....................ie. your father's father.............Mr Cormack

Hi Clare, for us to work back then we really need to know the names of both your father's parents. I know Hester is allegedly from the maternal side but we need verification to make sure we're following the right people.

If Lilian had a different surname to her mother then it may be because her mother had remarried at some point.

As we've stated above we're having trouble finding an obvious marriage for Lilian.

When and where did Lilian die?

What was her surname at the time?

Please tell us if the woman found for you in 1911 is the right one.............

there's no record of a death under that name..............

Reggie - sorry, my father's father is Sidney O'Connell Cormack (O'Connell is a christian name rather than part of the surname) born 1883 - 1942
