I can trace my family back to James Carter b.1807, married Ruth Rice. His son George b.1832, married Elizabeth Hooker. Their son George Adolphus Carter b.1859 (My Great Grandfather) is a bit of a mystery Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar - District: St Luke County: Middlesex - Volume: 1b Page: 589
I beileve George Adolphus arrived in Australia at the age of 14 in December 1872 on the ship "Hampshire". Victorian Unassisted Passage List - Fiche 315 Page 001.
I have no more information than the above but I'd love to know if he came out to Australia on his own and, if so, where he stayed until he reached majority.
He spent his adult life in Victoria but I can't find a death certificate for him.
He was a cigar manufacturer and my grandfather Arthur Laurence Carter was also in that trade.
Regards, David Carter

This link says that he left Great Britain, the country from which he belonged, on 20/04/1878 for NEW YORK. Sailed from Liverpool via Queenstown Ireland he went steerage. He is first name on the list George A Carter aged 20 Cigar Maker.
If this is correct when did he go to Australia?

He is also mentioned in several new articles on Trove, e.g.
The Argus, Wednesday 13 March 1895 George Carter, cigar maker, Carlton, who at a previous sitting of the board had stated that American "convict-made" cigars were sold in Melbourne, now produced a box of American cigars so marked in proof of his assertion. He said he bought this box of 50 cigars for 5s. in a Melbourne establishment where there were about 2,000 similar cigars in sight. He was in the United States for some years, and he knew that prisoners there were contracted out to cigar manufactureres : and he also had a list of firms in North Germany who amongst them employed 1,400 prisoners. He suggested that the duty should be increased, or that the Victorian Government should take over the tobacco trade and control it just as it controlled the railways or the post-office.
The Register (Adelaide), Friday 25 November 1904 TOBACCO MONOPOLY, THE CIGAR TRADE. MELBOURNE. November 24. The select committee of the Senate which was appointed to enquire into the question of the Government monopolizing the sale of tobacco met today. Evidence was given by Mr. George Adolphus Carter, cigar manufacturer, who stated that he had been 31 years in the trade. Assuming the output of cigars in Australia to be 47,000,000 the tobacco used in making them would be worth £93,839, and the cost of manufacture and distribution would be £229,843. The total revenue would be £697,775, and the total profit £467,969.
Zeehan and Dundas Herald (Tas), Thursday 4 January 1906 PUBLICATION DELAYED OWING TO FIRE. Melbourne, Wednesday. A fire broke out at midnight on the premises in Patrick Lane, off Lonsdale street, occupied by George A. Carter, cigar manufacturer, and the 'Tocsin' newspaper. Great damage was done to Carter's stock, but the 'Tocsin' property was only slightly affected. Publication will, however, be delayed for a couple of days.
