Is there anyway to find the original birth surname from an adoption certificate. I have the adoption certificate showing adoption as Hilda Elizabeth Turner born 1915 adopted 1930. I would be grateful for any help with this. Harvey Charles Cawley

as far as I know you cant get an original birth certificate UNLESS you are the person

my nephew was born 1990 and adopted his orig birth certificates there

Not sure you would be able to get a full cert though, i.e. one showing parents?

You have to KNOW the birth name to look for the reg'n and get a cert................for that info, you need to view the adoption files

My mother Hilda Elizabeth cawley nee Turner was born 28th December 1915 adopted by Joe & Elsie Turner 1930 She remarried Mr Ernest Hollingsworth. I have searched for a birth as Turner without success I cannot find her original birth dateSo am a bit stumped.

She was probably registered in Jan/March 1916.

Also, do you know Elsie's maiden name? Just wondering if there might be a connection with family somewhere.

Didn't your mother ever speak about her birth family?

She wasn't adopted until she was 14/15, so she must have been aware of events and people in her life prior to that.

She must have known - at least - where she lived

Adoption at such a comparatively late age is fairly unusual

There were four in OND 1915, but it's unlikely that her birth would have been registered so quickly in view of the time of year

This was brought to my attention simply because of your Surname Harvey....I too am one of those but a West Country one...So no relation as far as I can see unless its back in the mists of time.

I also note that no one has made the suggestion that maybe she was adopted informally as a baby and when it became legal to adopt in 1927?they then applied to do so..

What do you know of Joe and Elsie please?Can you give everything you do know....Also take into account your mother was a "war"baby and could have been born anywhere if illegit to cover her mothers shame.
And you CAN get her original birth cert if you know her birth name and place as I have done so for a friend of mine with her mother who had passed away..

I did assume she was adopted informally prior to 1930 as the adoption act was not passed till 1927 my mother died in 1964 before I was interested in geneology and weas not aware my mother had been adopted Joe & Elsie turner had no other children Harvey

It's a very long shot that Joe or Elsie Turner was in some way related?

The only marriage for Joseph and Elsie I can find is in 1913 and her name is Depalma/Dipalma. And I cannot find anything else on the Deplama family
