Gosh!! so many Emma Humphreys' The Emma Eliza Humphrey I have was born c1890, as she was aged 21 on her marriage to William Cant..It says her father is Richard Humphrey "labourer" and Williams is Henry Cant (dec) witnesses were Richard Cant and Ellen (Green) I think.. The story circulating is that Emmas mother Eliza Baker left her husband and went to live in the household of William Day (he registered her death in 1894) she took her son William but Edward found her and swopped William for Emma, and nothing was heard from father again, so I'm wondering where Richard fits in? Was Richard her brother?? Am I the only one who is seeing that the father listed is actually called "Richard" ?? and NOT Edward. |

According to the marriage for Edward Humphrey in 1881 his occupation is "fire brigade" and the address was ----dale Street,, but I am unable to trace either of them at this address, I cant even find Edward in 1881 at all.. |

Mmm I thought perhaps she didn't really know her fathers name and since Edward /Richard are similar she may well have got it wrong...But who is the Richard Humphrey "witness" to the marriage, that's the part which has thrown me, ever so slightly !! :-S |

These are the only Emma Humphrey births in Kent between 1887 and 1895. Which one do we think is hers? Obviously not the first two. The other two have already been posted as possibilities: |

Yes Vera!! that looks like the very same Edward, he took his two sons James and William from his wife Eliza and left Emma...I did see another marriage for him to a Mrs Todd...But what do you think of the other 1881 census, surely cant be the same Eliza Humphreys, but my golly its frustrating.. |

She was Emma Eliza, haven't been able to trace a birth where it lists her mother, she was aged 20 on the 1911 census and then aged 21 on her marriage in 1912 so I'm guessing her birth would have been 1890 -1891 |

Well, Nancy, there is no birth for Emma Humphrey in Kent in either of those years (on FreeBMD), with or without a middle name. |

Your nae the only one confused argyllgran, Emma's states her father was Richard, but he dumped her with the mother Eliza who died in 1894, this was Edward. The marriage says Edward and since Emma didn't have any contact with her father in over 20 years were assuming she has got the name mixed up, but yes your right, whos the witness then ?? |

Well you just never know argyllgran, she did have 2 other daughters Violet and Lillian, who she claims were William Humphrey, but she was living with a William Day in 1891 at the time.. |
