Hi again,
I ordered his children's marriage certificates (for Michael Lever and Sarah Lever - their fathers are recorded as John and William Lever respectively despite Michael's marriage being the only one appropriate and Sarah's being correct as Hannah Monkouse, her mother is living with her in 1891 ... how on earth can this be explained?) Did James emmigrate between 1881-1891 perhaps? But if so, why did his son and daughter name their father incorrectly on their marriage certificates?
Thanks,
Peter

I see what you mean
though the James with William in 1881 is a waterman, the other James living in Weston is a general labourer

Ok starting to get a little more interesting now ...
Looking on the Manchester marriage collection on ancestry:
Searching for Lever in Bolton, father William Lever, Weaver (as per the 1845 James Lever/Hannah Monkhouse marriage).
Found a possible brother William Lever, FISH DEALER married in 1845 to Margaret.

Hi Ann, yes again I was confused by all of that ... in 1851 he is a unemployed labourer but in 1881 (from memory) he was a waterman ... what is this a sign off?
Advernturous career changer?

He could be, but I have no idea. I've never been able to trace James Lever senior's family as they were two James Levers born c. 1815-1825 in Bolton, both with father's named William Lever!
That doesn't really help does it?

one of the things which puzzles me is that on his marriage to Hannah Monkhouse James is described as 'chemist' (possibly an exaggeration!) in 1871 posted he is I think it is Chemical labourer rather than general lab (compare the 1st letter of occ with C of Cheshire) but on Michael's baptism he is a fish dealer!!

all the others have mmn = Monkhouse on lancashirebmd, but there is no James with either mmn = Monkhouse or Lever as presumably he would have been if he was Hannah's (1862) son
could he be a nephew???

Hmmmm just looking at some records - seems the children of James and Hannah 'Ann' Monkhouse Lever are:
William Monkhouse (1843 born before their marriage in 1845, who died in 1904) Hannah Lever (1846) John Henry Lever (1850-1850) James Lever (1851) Michael Lever (1853-1913) Sarah Elizabeth Lever (1856-1943) Joseph Lever (1861-1939) James Lever (1862)
Frustratingly there are OTHER James and Hannah/Ann Levers baptising/burying children in Bolton at that time. Lever seems to be a very common name there!
Does this help, find out where James born 1862 fits in? Could he be a son of Hannah, born 1862?

I did wonder lancashireAnn as was unable to find the family in the 1861 census - the children I did find on other census' were rather spread out in age, but I'm sure the 1861 would have "filled some gaps"

I wonder if the James b1862 shown in the 1871 census is actually a grandson rather than son.
Of the 6 (poss 8) children on Lancs bmd with mmn = Monkhouse the only James is born in 1851.
there are a few James born 1861/62 with other mmn

Wow thank you so much - well, I need to see that marriage certificate from 1885! But yes, this seems probable. I actually have access to ancestry but as I am sure you know, sometimes, the nudge from an outside eye makes all of the difference.
Well, the Prescot marriage in 1885 is interesting, as Joseph's brother William Lever (shown in the 1881 with James SENIOR), was married in Farnworth, near PRESCOT in 1866 as was their sister Sarah Lever, who married there in Oct. Qrt 1879 to James Hibbert (even though her children were born and raised in Runcorn, I think she is the lady who died in Prescot District in 1943).
My ancestor, and the aforementioned's brother, Micheal Lever (1853-1871) married in Warrington in 1871 - I assume this was some kind of elopement, especially as his father is recorded as John NOT James ... I searched and searched around this, and it seems to have been a lie on the part of the groom, or a clerical error?
The question is, WHY would they marry there? And why would James SENIOR die so far from home if he was the one who died in ASHTON in 1890?
I'm going to look for a death for Joseph Lever and will post findings.
