Looks like I've fallen into the trap of assuming that Adam was younger than he was, he may well have been married twice maybe the Agnes (29) in the 1841 census was his first wife??? Then he's remarried to Jane Burgess.

Just realised that I had posted the comment about Adam being a widower to the wrong post; it is on Adam and Jane's marriage that he is shown as a widower, not his son's!

Have now found record of Agnes Aitchison's (nee Edgar) death Q1 1944, son Joseph also born Q1 1844 (died Q3 1844). I think my best guess is that Agnes died either in childbirth or shortly after?

I don't suppose that some kind soul could tell me where Agnes Edgar was born?

I have found a record of a baptism is May 1811 of a Agnes Edgar in Dumfriesshire (place of Adam's birth) although the fact that they married in Liverpool in 1840, sort of muddies the water here?

The 1841 just gives Scotland as POB.

Adam and Agnes's marriage cert will give you her father's name which would help to confirm any baptism.

I wouldn't let the Liverpool marriage worry you too much, there was a lot of trade (by sea) between South West Scotland and Liverpool at that time and Adam's occupation (Shipsmith) would account for the move there.

Thanks, it all looks the right area and dates. However I've been sent another message which shows the Agnes Edgar I'm related to was from Ireland. It looks like Adam, as you say has moved down to Liverpool, because of the shipping, met Agnes, who along with thousands of others had moved to Liverpool from Ireland. The Ireland connection also fits in with other themes in that branch on my family, all Orange Lodge members.
