Marie Celeste. A question I didn't answer about James and Bridget. No name for the babe who died soon after birth but I believe their other child was a girl named Mary.
I presume they lived in Deptford or Greenwich and that James was the second son. Even that will probably be inaccurate . I know that when, during the wake and with the baby's coffin in the room they (no idea who was there) all went to the Pub. Billy, the Family black sheep discovered this and was absolutely furious and a row followed. It doesn't help with any time line though , does it? Hope I have answered all the queries within my knowledge. Bunny

Many thanks MC for the army records. I found them quite fascinating I suppose there wasn't. A great deal more information there could have been. If he'd been a Cadet or similar we would have info about his Parents but no such luck. I read his chest measurements as his height at first! One of the Little People...I can't understand why having received his discharge he seems to have enlisted for a couple of years again.I probably know more about him than his close family ever did. It didn't mention why he was demoted to Corporal . That could have proved interesting. I don't think he was a heavy imbiber.. Again, my thanks , Bunny

Re: Vicci's findings, I think a marriage in 1870 could tie up with William jnr ("the army man") being born 1879.

Re: Dorothy Rosemary Shapcott, it's possible that the person registering the death thought Rose was short for Rosemary. The only way to be sure is to buy a copy of the certificate for that 1974 Shapcott marriage.

Bunny, not sure why you think your records about Herbert marrying Maud are wrong?

England & Wales, Marriage Index, 1916-2005

Name: Herbert A Colbourne
Spouse: Maud Kent
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1946
Registration district: Lewisham
Inferred County: Kent
Volume Number: 5d
Page Number: 231

They're together in 1947:

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965

Name: Herbert A Colbourne
Year: 1947
County or Borough: Newham
Ward or Division/Constituency: Woolwich
Street Address: 357 Green Lane

Hello MC many thanks as usual for the very interesting research .I was really surprised to read the Marriage year of S A Driscoll to Bill W. was 1923. I think that was the year she was widowed . Winnifred was the last born (1920) Alfie was in the Navy for many years Merchant Navy I suppose. Spent time in China and really saw the world. Lived in Putney and died when he was 90 or more. The family were never advised though they used to visit him regularly . I had seen a marriage reported with a Dorothy Rose and Mr Shapcott. The family lost track of her after her marriage to Martin Boon. I don't think she had Rosemary as a middle name but who can be sure.Vicci 's help was interesting thought the dates are a bit 'iffy' . Susan Anna Jnr knew them both and she was born 1905 I know she did't like Bridget and I thought the baby episode was when she was about 12 or 13'.
I think I saw Bert Colbourne written with a middle name Alfred but it will possibly

Become Arthur. My Maud Kent record was obviously wrong. Re Vicci 's research again with a Wm Driscoll Marrying a Mary Hayes in 1870 in Cork. The army man Wm
Driscoll was born on May 1st 1879 marrying. Susan Warren in 1899 when they were both 20 so that can't work out can it? You know how stupid I get with these dates!) Re Wm D's Army Service I heard on the radio that in WW 2 Irish men sympathetic to the English left their Irish Army Units and travelled here to rejoin
Other units. Perhaps that's what he did when he joined up. He carried a baton but I understand some Sergeants in some regiments did but of course not with every Regiment. Thank you helpers! Hope K and Rootie are well? Regards Bunny

These are just possibles for Dorothy:

England & Wales, Marriage Index, 1916-2005

Name: Dorothy R Boon
Spouse: Wilfred L Shapcott
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1974
Registration district: Lewisham
Inferred County: Kent
Volume Number: 14
Page Number: 0796

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2006

Name: Dorothy Rosemary Shapcott
Birth Date: 29 Mar 1910
Date of Registration: Dec 1996
Age at Death: 86
Registration district: Torbay
Inferred County: Devon
Register Number: B72A
District and Subdistrict: 4221B
Entry number: 68

You could always buy that marriage certificate to see if it might be her.

Although the 1949 Electoral Roll shows Hilda V Boon with Martin they didn't actually marry until much later:

England & Wales, Marriage Index, 1916-2005

Name: Martin A Boon
Spouse: Hilda V Lovering
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1969
Registration district: Greenwich
Inferred County: Greater London, Kent, London
Volume Number: 5b
Page Number: 1170

So, we can work out that Martin and Dorothy Rose must have split up c1946 but he probably wasn't free to remarry until 1969 by which time he was either divorced or Dorothy Rose had died.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 21 Apr 2013 12:03

This is Dorothy Rose and Martin (he has middle name Alfred) in 1946,first sighting is 1932 at 16 Burney Street.:

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965

Name: Dorothy R Boon
Year: 1946
County or Borough: Newham
Ward or Division/Constituency: Woolwich
Street Address: 12 Woodhill

In 1947 Martin is at the above address alone. By 1949 there is a Hilda V Boon with him at that address.

Looks like Martin and Dorothy had a daughter in 1933 (won't post details on here as she may still be living).

Could Bert actually have been Herbert Arthur (and not Alfred)?

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2006

Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1974
Age at Death: 63
Registration district: Surrey North Western
Inferred County: Surrey
Volume: 17

Vicci - they really do look like good contenders.

Bunny - Susan married Bill Wootton in Greenwich, 1923 - I posted their marriage on the bottom of page 1.

Here they are in 1945

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965
Name: Susan A Wootton
Year: 1945
County or Borough: Lewisham
Ward or Division/Constituency: Lewisham
Street Address: 53 Durham Hill

She's with William and also at the address are Alfred A Driscoll and Winniefred Driscoll.

By 1964 there's just Susan and Alfred at that address.

Bunny, sorry to be pedantic but I'm pretty sure Amelia was born 1912 as posted, but will delve further.

Put your thinking cap on and see if you can come up with anything on William's brother James and wife Bridget.

Hi MC. I am enjoying all your research ! Yes Susan Anna married Bill Wootten but I can't find when or where. She lived in Durham Hill until her death . I think she had known him for many years. I know very little about him. I saw him once on my way home from school! Amelia Caroline was born 11 August 1907 I am pretty sure. She had a little girl Jacqueline about 1934 died 1935. Eventually had 3 sons. Her husband was Richard Groom. Ann's husband Herbert Alfred Colbourne seems to have married a Maud Kent when he was released from Marienberg . I found a James Colbourne in a family tree of hers but he hasn't responded to my message. I couldn't. Find a death date for "Bert". It was very sad when Ann was killed. She was working on Munitions or something and in lodgings in Hammersmith. The Downs Syndrome son there became so attached to her it was thought it was kinder to move out and on the first evening she moved was persuaded to go with the two girls of the house to the Dance School. One sister found she had only one dance shoe and went back for it and in that time the bomb fell. Talk about fate,eh?
I found a Mary Ann Hayes born 1859 married 1876 died 1921 62 years. A Wm D marr1876 but no more info. Do you think these were my relatives? I also found Benjamin Hayes may have married a Mary Ann Bleyney in 1869. He or she died 1893 aged 60. I have never found what happened to Dorothy Rose after she married Martin Boon. She was born1910 and married him in 1931. He died in 1982 . I wonder if they divorced because I can't find anything else about her. I look forward to receiving the Army stuff by E Mail I am pleased you kept the E mail address. I hope I've covered all the points you mentioned. Look forward to our next exchange!

Going back to the main purpose of this thread - finding Williams parents, do you have any dates/places for James and Bridget, names of any children? I'm hoping that tracing him might help to lead us back to the parents.

Re: your theory of the place of registration (i.e. Bermondsey) being assumed as the place of birth - I've never personally come across this before but it's not infeasible. Be interested to know what other researchers think.
