PatinCyprus Report 16 Apr 2013 17:30

There could have been a quiet wedding on the Friday. The Christening was on the Sunday, all the Christening I've been to were Sundays. The dates of birth on the Christening ties up with a last quater 1862 registration of the birth.

If they didn't have much money it would be a very small wedding and 1 day off work would be all they'd have, might have even been in his lunch time. They couldn't afford to stand on ceremony in those days.

It should be noted that it is now nearly 2 years since John Hack declared himself as a widower in 1861 and another child has been born and Christened with the name Taylor. Perhaps it's lies to the census but wouldn't lie in church.

John Henry is on the Census as a 9 yr old in 1871 with his parents

That is strange,three christenings.
All two days after the parents married in the same church.
I would love to see the originals to find out if Familysearch have mistranscribed.

Mike the census in 1861 states the girls are named Mary and Sarah Hack and the births are registered as Hacks. John Hack is claiming them and says he's a widower whilst Elizabeth is still a Taylor and says she's married, no claim on the girls at this time. This only happens at their Christening when the surname isn't important.

Looks as if they were covering up the fact that they were living together and not married to each other for whatever reason they had. They married in 1863.

Thank you safc.
That came as a surprise. That now excludes the 1856 marriage.

My point was that I have experienced 2 cases where the child's baptism was recorded under a new surname with the step father being named as the father.

Just pointing out that the parents named on a baptism are not always correct ( ie different from those on the birth cert)

Thelma Report 16 Apr 2013 12:08

I cannot thank you all enough. You have found information that I could not.
Do not know how I missed that marriage to Selina in1856.
The baptisms in the name of Taylor came as a big surprise.
I will have to buy the birth cert for Mary Jane.

Mike - I think you're mistaken. The purpose of a christening is to give the child their christian name(s). It has nothing to do with surnames. The typical post-1810 baptismal register has a column headed "Child's Christian Name" and a double column headed "Parents Name" which is subdivided into "Christian" and "Surname" columns. So if the entry said "John illegitimate son of" "William Smith & Mary Brown", you're left to guess what his surname is - in truth you're always left to guess, but the guess his surname is the one used by both his parents is the usual guess, and nearly always correct.

Similarly, birth certificates have no absolute connection with a child's legal name - I presume you've already concluded that (unless you know a couple of guys called Male Smith).

Although John is recorded as a widower on 1861 census, does the marriage cert in 1863 bear this out ?

Not unheard of for stepparents to be named on christening records.

I have 2 rellies who were born with one surname and christened with another 4 years later after a re-marriage.

Can't see a death for Sarah so perhaps they just put the wrong year as it's about right month, just should be 1860, perhaps miss transcribed.

Edit - Sarah is 10 in 1871 census and Mary down as Mary J.
