Hello,
I'm researching Martha Salmon [b. 1890 West Ham] and have got back as far as the 1891C where she is 9mths old but down as a visitor to William & Martha Holloway. On 1901 &1911Cs however, she is still living with them but is down as their neice. I can't find anything about her birth or parents. Can anyone help please? Thanks.

Hello, welcome to the boards.

How did you connect to her in the first place? (Just looking for clues).

Have you tracked William and Martha's siblings to see if she is their child?

Hello,
Thank you John, Marie Celeste and alviegal for your quick replies and information. I'm actually researching this family for someone else. As she is only down as a visitor on the 1891C, I was wondering if perhaps Martha had been orphaned after that census, and taken in by her aunt & uncle before the 1901C, As her surname is Salmon on both census, maybe she was originally named Lilian after her mum and Martha after her aunt, then later the Lilian was dropped. Also, if she's a neice, that means her aunts' maiden name must have been Salmon. A few more questions there for me to go into!! Thanks again for your help.

In which case Lilian Martha is not the one on the 1891 census

If she was born West Ham then it is probably the one John posted

Who did she marry and when please?

For reference, the 1911 Census says she was born in Canning Town

Could this make a difference in the search for her??

1911 Census

Name: Martha Salmon
Age in 1911: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1891
Relation to Head: Niece
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Canning Town, Essex
Civil parish: West Ham
County/Island: Essex
Country: England
Street Address: 6 Swanscombe Street, Canning Town, E
Marital Status: Single
Occupation: Machinist
Registration district: West Ham
Registration District Number: 188
Sub-registration district: Canning Town

William Holloway 51
Martha Holloway 50
Martha Salmon 20
Hedley Wilkinson 9

She is down as Niece to Head of Household ........ meaning William's niece, as against niece of his wife Martha

These are the births in Essex for the June quarter (which fits with age in 1891)

Births Sep 1890 (>99%)
Salmon Arthur Edwin Saffron W. 4a 639
Salmon Doris W. Ham 4a 269
Salmon Ethel Laura Linton 3b 486
Salmon Florence Louisa Edmonton 3a 359
Salmon Frederick Ernest Edmonton 3a 382
Salmon George Edward W. Ham 4a 120
Salmon Maria Dunmow 4a 630
Salmon Martha Dunmow 4a 630
Salmon Martha Eliza J W. Ham 4a 120

So if it is the Dunmow Essex one then she was a twin

But the West Ham one fits best with Canning Town I think

Re: "Also, if she's a neice, that means her aunts' maiden name must have been Salmon" - not necessarily! William may have had a sister who married a Salmon ......

but on the other hand where Sylvia says "She is down as Niece to Head of Household ........ meaning William's niece, as against niece of his wife Martha" - I've seen umpteen cases where the niece/nephew was via the wife's side but has just been recorded as e.g. "nephew".

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 5 Apr 2013 08:40

There is a marriage in 1891 June quarter between a Martha Holloway and a Samuel Salmon in Bethnal Green

Haven't as yet been able to prove a link between Martha Holloway and William. I can find a household where there is a Martha aged 9 and William aged 3 in 1861 (parents Benjamin and Ann)

But only 1871 census I can find for William - Booking Essex - shows him with siblings Henry and Robert with mother Elizabeth who has just married James Alnutt (and given birth to a stepsister).

I can't find Elizabeth with William and Henry (born Greenwich 1859) in 1861!

All of which goes nowhere to establishing Martha Salmon's parentage :-(

I'd take a punt on buying the certificate for the Martha Eliza J born in West Ham

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 5 Apr 2013 11:18

Unfortunately, it looks like the Samuel Salmon who married at Bethnal Green in 1891, married Julia Bush, not Martha Holloway.

Strangely, on the 1911 census William and Martha Holloway claim to have been married 30 years, with no children being born. So I don't know who the Frederick Holloway born in Woolwich could have been.

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 5 Apr 2013 11:35

Oh Christina you are such spoilsport :-)

If Jax has the right marriage for William and Martha, the 30 years is wrong as well!

Jude

ChristinaS Report 5 Apr 2013 12:18

Sorry about that :-(

I'm not so sure "niece" is going to lead us anywhere. I think they were a bit free with their definition of the word.

There's a tree on Ancestry that has Frederick Parsons & Emma Hall (on the 1901 census as nephew to William Holloway). According to that tree, Frederick's mother was a single woman named Ada Parsons. So that looks unlikely to lead anywhere either. Has anyone connected "cousin" Hedley Wilkinson from the 1911 census?

If this was my family, I'd send for that Martha Eliza J. Salmon b. West Ham that Jude has listed above.

The more digging we do the more tangled it gets!

William with brothers Henry and Robert are on the 1871 census with mother Elizabeth newly married to James Alnutt/Allnatt.

Can't find William in 1881 or Henry and/or Robert again. Frederick "son" - can't find a birth in Woolwich in 1880 to match and can't find him in 1881 or after 1891 :-(

I found the Allnatts in 1881 but no Holloways....

Can't find William and Henry in 1861 and can't find Elizabeth with a Stephen Holloway (from Jax's marriage)...there is a Stephen Holloway death in Woolwich in 1868 which would free up Elizabeth to marry James Allnatt in 1870

and I could go on and on and on :-S :-S :-S :-S :-S

I'd definitely start with the certificate for Martha Eliza J Salmon!!!!!!

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 5 Apr 2013 13:10

Maybe there is a connection with Frederick Parsons.

There's a marriage (on Ancestry) in 1881 for Robert Holloway - father Stephen Holloway (carman) to an Ada Maria Parsons.

Sorry can't put down more detail. Must go out now :-(
