Nicola - the Register Office won't allow you to view their copies of the marriage certificate without first buying it.

However, the Record office (or Archive/Library) will let you scroll through all parish records they hold for free, and pay to make a copy. Not sure of the current cost of printouts, but usually a nominal sum in the region of £1 or less.

ADDED - the extract from the WW1 records previously posted says

*Wife........Esther George...(Residence: 33 Church Vale, Handsworth, Birmingham
Married in the Parish Church, Handsworth Stafford 08/06/1911*

Some of the registers for Handsworth, Staffs are on line according to this link

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=2465.0
Quote from that link cos I was confused
*Handsworth used to be in Staffordshire, but is now part of Birmingham*

If the link doesn't help, they are likley to be held at Birmingham Central Library within the Local Studies and History Department.

From reading the Boards, access is/was limited due to rebuilding/relocation. You might want to contact them before travelling. The web site says the FH section is closed until Sept 2013

Yes, I agree Prickles! Marriage certificate first, then if we can't find him on census his birth certificate.

I am wondering if his Mum re-married and he is lurking under a different surname in 1891 and 1901.

Ok............someone correct me if i am wrong.

But i think the only way forward (Or backward!) and i know i have said it before............but i really do think you need to purchase a copy of George and Esther's marriage cert to be certain.

Choccy that's the same census as posted on page 1......

Nicola, I don't think that is your George....too young?

This man was born in 1911. Although I am not seeing a possible birth for him on FreeBMD.

Deaths Mar 1956 LOWE George V 45 Birmingham 9c 361

Your George would have been 69 in 1954?

Births Mar 1887 LOWE George Victor Birmingham 6d 89

Youll have to bear with me here lol. After adding him to my family tree, i had a few hits on the 1901 census. I knew he was born on west bromwich, birmingham, but obv wasnt sure. It showed him and his siblings and his parents.

Unfortunately MMN (Mothers Maiden Name) only appears on the record index of births from June 1911.

I have tried searching for George Victor with parents in the 1891 and 1901 census.......but not only is there not a George on a census with the middle name Victor or even with just the intial "V"........there is more than one to choose from.

I will take another look.....

Had a look and there are 3 possibilities.

I think you will need to purchase George and Esther's marrage cert.

The best place to order certs is online here.........

www.gro.gov.uk/

Certs cost £9.25

You will be asked......Is the GRO index reference number known?

By that they mean the Vol and Page number.

That looks good Prickles - same year of birth on Esther's emigration record.

Blowed if I can find George Victor going to Australia or death records for him or Esther.
