Thank you.
I've done a few searches on different sites and found over a dozen possible marriages for John Robinson and Mary, all in and around Manchester. Don't think I will ever know for certain.
Thank you so much for all the time you have put in, and for anything else that you uncover, I appreciate it x.

A couple of suggestions:

Here's the marriage of a John Robinson who's a joiner, as a possibility:

Manchester, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930 (Cathedral) about John Robinson
Name: John Robinson
Marriage Date: 18 Jan 1812
Parish: Manchester, St Mary, St Denys and St George
Spouse's Name: Mary Arkwright
Archive Roll: 692

And this one's a blacksmith:

Manchester, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930 (Cathedral) about John Robinson
Name: John Robinson
Marriage Date: 12 Aug 1816
Parish: Manchester, St Mary, St Denys and St George
Spouse's Name: Mary Barten
Archive Roll: 693

I've no idea of their ages, though.

Sorry, Mary is named as John Robinson's wife in the birth record of their daughter. Will see if I can find a marriage. x

ManchesterCat Report 25 Mar 2013 13:06

Hi, thanks for that. I don't know the name of John Robinson's wife, do I? His daughter was Mary Ann who married John Leech in 41.
I will see if I can locate a marriage.

Here's a slight possibility for John Robinson in 1841. He's an "engine m", presumably "engine maker", which would fit with his being called a millwright on Mary Ann's marriage details.Living in Yorkshire Street.

(Millwright per Wikipedia:
A millwright is a craftsman or tradesman engaged with the construction and maintenance of machinery. More generally in the English speaking world, early millwrights were specialist carpenters who erected machines used in agriculture, food processing and processing lumber and paper. In the early part of the Industrial Revolution, their skills were pressed into service building the earliest powered textile mills.)

We don't know if his wife Mary was still alive in 1841, do we?
This one seems to be living in some sort of lodging house.

ArgyllGran Report 25 Mar 2013 11:36

Yes, I think you're quite right. I'd forgotten the Salford connection.

ManchesterCat

ManchesterCat Report 25 Mar 2013 11:21

Hi
I'm not sure either of those are correct as Mary Ann on the 51 census is born Salford Manchester and was living on the border of Salford a couple of minutes away in Hulme Manchester when she married. Caton Lancaster is an hours drive.
What do you think? Thanks x

ArgyllGran Report 25 Mar 2013 11:07

I posted a birth date for Mary ann on page 1, but in view of the approx YOB in 1841 census, this one looks more likely:

Mary Ann Robinson

England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

christening: 13 May 1821 Caton, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
residence: Caton, Lancashire, England

parents:John Robinson, Mary Ann

If that's her, I wonder if this is her father in 1871? A widower and a millhand:

Hi, thank you for helping x
I also have been looking for John Robinson and have reached a dead end. I have also been looking for a Samuel Leech (Leach if misspelled) and can only find the family living in Littlemoss Ashton in 41 which was detailed earlier, which now can't be the correct family since John is living in Stott St Hulme (but born in Ashton, not far away).
I can't find the other Samuel Leech's that Kucinta kindly found.
I might go and grab a coffee and wake up a bit more before continuing.

Thanks too for the info re Ancestry. I might subscribe to one more site, either Ancestry or Find my Past.
Regards x

ManchesterCat -
You asked about searching by address - no, not on Ancestry. I search by name and any other known factors such as age, place, etc. Then, having found a likely-looking record, depending on the census year, either the transcription will give the address, or I can look at the image of the original document and see what the address is.

Re John Robinson -
I've been hunting, but so far can't find any with the right combination of suitable age and occupation of millwright, in Manchester. I assume he lived somewhere in Manchester, as Mary Ann's birth and marriage took place there.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 24 Mar 2013 23:49

Looking at https://familysearch.org

There seem to be three Samuel Leeches breeding in Ashton under Lyne around the time John was born.

AnnCardiff posted a birth for John son of Samuel and Elizabeth, but there is also a Samuel and Ann breeding at the same time by the looks of things, and a Samuel and Mary.

I used Findmy past to search by address and to trawl Stott Street- unfortunately it didn't have street numbers in this census, so I had to look at a large percentage of the street before I found the Leach boys.

When I saw argyllgran had found Mary, I just looked for her by name to check the address she and the Higginsons were living at, to see if it were Chester Road.

ManchesterCat

ManchesterCat Report 24 Mar 2013 23:30

Thanks
Is it possible then to search via address? that would be very useful.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 24 Mar 2013 23:25

I'm using Ancestry.co.uk

ManchesterCat

ManchesterCat Report 24 Mar 2013 23:23

Thank you very much
I didn't even think to search for the marriage witnesses, well done.

It appears that John and Mary Ann Robinson were married and at least for a few days after their marriage lived separately, as Mary has the surname Leach and not Robinson and lived with the Higginsons.

I am now unsure whether the family I have in Littlemoss in 41 is in fact the correct John with his father and siblings, as the Warburton family also have a john leech living in the same street as Mary after their marriage as you have found.

In which case I need to locate both Mary Ann's and John's fathers now.

May I ask which source are you using to find the information you have?

Thank you x

Yes, here are John(son) and Thomas in 1841, in Stott Street:

1841 England Census about Johnson Leach

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 24 Mar 2013 23:04

Further to Argyllgran - the address for Mary Leach is Chester Road as per the marriage details:

Address: Chester Road, Manchester, Hulme County: Lancashire<<<<<<<

STANLEY, William M 45 1796 Lancashire
STANLEY, Ann F 45 1796 Lancashire
LEACH, Mary F 20 1821 Lancashire<<<<<<<<<<<<
HIGGINSON, Charles M 35 1806 Lancashire<<<<<<<
HIGGINSON, Charlott F 30 1811 Lancashire<<<<<<<<<<<
HIGGINSON, William M 14 1827 Lancashire
HIGGINSON, Mary F 7 1834 Lancashire
HIGGINSON, John M 4 1837 Lancashire
HIGGINSON, Thomas M 1 1840 Lancashire

I think we have the couple, who for some reason have not yet moved in together? Or maybe Mary was just visiting with the Higginsons? So 1841 John is still in Stott St, and Mary [Ann] at Chester Road, just as per the marriage details.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 24 Mar 2013 22:58

I've trawled Stott St (John's address in marriage details) and this pair were all I could find as regards Leech/Leach variants:

Address: Stott Street, Manchester, Hulme County: Lancashire<<<<<<<<<

WARBURTON, Joseph M 25 1816 Lancashire
WARBURTON, Elizabeth F 30 1811 Lancashire
WARBURTON, William M 7 1834 Lancashire
WARBURTON, Mary F 2 1839 Lancashire
LEACH, Thos M 25 1816 Lancashire<<<<<<<<<<<
LEACH, John M 22 1819<<<<<<<<<

However this John is not born in county. His occupation is very hard to make out, but at a pinch it could be joiner. Maybe joiner and 'journeyman' abbreviated, but hard to be certain. However no sign of his new bride.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 24 Mar 2013 22:53

In 1841 there's a Mary Leach in the same household as Charles and Charlotte Higginson. People with those names were witnesses at John and Mary Ann's marriage.
