Janet - have sent you pm :-)

Dea Report 10 Mar 2013 19:53

I think we all know who that is Janet !

and it is NOT lickle me !! ;-) :-D

Seriously though, I agree with what Cynths and others have said - I do try to explain to people why they should not duplicate a request etc. - I remember when I was new and knew nothing !!

I asked silly questions and didn't give enough info and so I remember what it was like.

There are a very few people on here who have no consideration for 'new' members and can be very harsh with them.

This is quite wrong !! - We were all new once and we should all remember this and try to help rather than chastise.

One thing I would like to add, we've mentioned taking the rude posters to task, but we have to be careful that we don't end up with an argument on the requesting posters thread - that would scare them off even more.

If someone has been abrupt or aggressive I try to post something a little friendlier straight after it.

Looking in from across "the pond" & have been watching this thread from the start. I too agree with all that have posted re this subject & thank you for doing so.
Quite often I pop in, usually well after UK hours & to see if I can help out with any queries re Canadian content....& have seen some of those very curt & abrupt replies! Left me thinking OMG & cringed at the very thought as to how those, who had all in good faith posted their queries were left feeling? Many a time I considered posting a reply, but thought better of it, for fear of reprisal in the event, that I too in the future may require some help with with family research. I really feel for those, who have been treated in such a manner & most likely will not return for help. Perhaps certain people, should take into consideration, there are members just starting out with family history, including the use of computers & their given ages! Not everyone is computer savvy & neither are they guru's of genealogy! I know I sure as heck was'nt & still learning!

K/Regards,
A/Canuck.

I agree with MarieCeleste. The best way to treat a curt reply is to follow it up asap with something friendlier and more helpful.

I admit to being a rather "to the point" person and never look to see if it is a new poster but try to treat any poster with respect. If I can help then I will but if I can't say anything constructive, I prefer to say nothing.

It does no harm to remember the quote "do unto others as you would have then do unto you" (often mis-quoted as "do unto to others as they do unto you").

AnotherCanuck - do like your avatar, it's the feeling I get when I read some new posters requests and have to put myself into friendly, constructive, helpful mode.

Just saw this thread!
Unless I am much mistaken I know EXACTLY who the 'board police person ' is. Strangely absent from here.
Interestingly, I have challenged this person's manner once or twice and never had a response to my comments. On one occasion at least they have just removed the 'offending' posting.
Obviously they choose their victims carefully!

Jude - rugby union - it has to be as my son still plays occasionally

it's a long long time since I actually went to watch Blackpool - children rather required attention on Saturdays - but I did like listening to Ian Holloway on the telly

long time since we have seen a name with Canuck in it!

AnnCardiff Report 10 Mar 2013 23:56

could that be our Janey? I do hope it is - I know she's still around :-)

I always say "welcome" to new posters and always do my best to help - do get a bit frustrated when someone posts "looking for Smith from Epsom" or something of that ilk ;-)

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 10 Mar 2013 23:57

second thoughts - don't think it is Janey

I've only just seen this thread, and had time to read it through.

I fully agree with Cyn's OP ..........

...... although I have to admit that there are times when I get frustrated, and maybe what I post comes over as more abrupt than I really meant it to.

and then there are the posters who are abusive to the helpers :-(

I think people also sometimes forget that not everyone has a MENSA brain, but just because they are less academic, does this mean they are any less entitled to want to find out about their history??

I know many people have said about how quiet it is on the boards recently, and I feel that can be attributed somewhat to the manner of some 'helpers'.

A kind word always works wonders and doesnt damage anyones self esteem.

I was always taught "Manners cost nothing, use them freely"

So many of you are wonderful in the way you assist and guide, but it only takes the one or two that make you feel belittled to stop you from returning to the boards.

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 11 Mar 2013 07:13

Vanessa, a timely thought re "manners". This was in yesterday's Sunday Express

Many years ago, the actress Mia Farrow was dining with the Queen Mother at Clarence house and asked the monarch which aspect of child rearing she considered to be the most important. "Manners," she replied. "Without them, it doesn't matter who you are or what you do - you will never leave a good impression."

So there you go!

Some more excellent points raised I see - thank you. :-D

Thank goodness the majority of folk on here are so friendly, helpful and a pleasure to come into contact with :-D

I was in touch with JaneyC a couple of weeks ago to let her know about FannyByGaslight's illness. Janey seems fine and is beavering away happily on another site.

It's good to hear that Janey is fine. Miss her sometimes "off the loop" personality on here. She was quite a character.
