My great great grandfather was a Romany gypsy. Unfortuantly I don't know much about him. Is is possible to find information on romany's? His surname was Lamb and he was from London. That's all I know.

I'd love to find out more about my Romany history. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks for reading

Hi Mandy - welcome to the boards

the thing is if we find someone with the name Lamb, how will you know it's the right one or not

I think you must know more than you're telling us - how did you get back to him

Thank you for your replies. I'll have a look at those links tomorrow, thank you.

My mum told me that he was a Romany, she is trying to find something with his first name as she can't remember it. I knew his son, my great grandad, I know his name, but don't have his date of birth. Although I don't know it that would help? his first name was Arthur. I'm very limited on information for my family as there isn't many of us left and no one seems to know anything. As far as I am aware, they were a large family so any leads may help me find further information.

Hi Amanda

You say you knew your GGrandfather.....How old was he, what year and where did he die, where did he live and did he have family.....these details can all be starting points.....

Even a guess at age can be good sometimes...

He died in 1998/1999 I think. He died in Malta and was flown home to Essex for his funeral. He was from London originally, but lived in Essex. I don't know how old he was but I would guess probably in his mid 80's when he passed away. He had 2 daughters, Rosemary and Margaret, and a son, Lee. He was married to my great grandmother, who passed away last year. I know he had siblings but I don't know how many or their names.

Thank you for your help :)

Hi Amanda, what was your great gran's name? If we can find their marriage that could be something to work back from.

Have you looked for any records on FreeBMD? http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

If you can find records that you are confident are right then it's easier to work back on the census.

My great grandmothers name was Janet. I don't know her maiden name. Her and my great grandfather actually married, divorced and then remarried again, just to confuse things more! She had two daughters with my great grandfather, and another daughter with someone else who was put up for adoption. My great grandmother passed away last year in Malta.

I will have a look on that link today, thank you :)

I posted the marriage above there are two daughters born in the late 30s named Rosemary and Margaret which you can find on freebmd.

You will need to purchase the marriage cert to go back any further to find out their ages and fathers names

Welcome to the boards Kim.

Although there is no obvious connection to Amanda's family, you could send her a personal message by clicking on her name. If she still has access to the linked email address, she'll be told you are trying to contact her.

Why not start a thread of your own? It sounds very much as if you'll need copies of birth & marriage certificates to get ages/year of birth & parental names.

Kim, I'm just copying this information over from Liz's thread so others know the family you are interested in:

John Eyres, married aged 18,born 1897 to Elsie Georgina Hughes ,she was 19,born 1896..they married @ the register office,in the Parish of St Thomas ,Salisbury,Wiltshire,on the 18/8/1915,the witness were Charles Jarvis and Charles Packet.(ref vol 5A,page 543)
John's occupation is stated as a sheepskin dealer and Elsie as an hawkers.
John's father William is also a skin dealer and Elsie's father Fred is an hawkers.
The marriage is also included in the records belonging to the R&TFH Society...I have also found the marriage of Walter Eyres and Amy Hughes,of which both John and Elsie were witness' ..and from the following information it is fair to say that both John and Walter are brothers as is Elsie and Amy.....the marriage of Walter Eyres and Amy Hughes at the register office district of Amesbury,Wiltshire on 18/3/1916
Walter is aged 29,bachelor,dealer,son of Walter Eyres,Amy is 21,daughter of Frederick and an hawker :-

And part of your reply:

Is there any were else I can look for information too see if they had 2 daughters one of which is my mum , what's all this mean was my mum a gypsy too am I half gypsy ,is there any way I can find information on extended realitives,Just got my mums birth certifacate mothers name Hughs seems like they spelt Ayres Eyres in diffent ways just trying to track some distant relatives think that is going to be very hard , wondered what they did before they settled down . Thanks
------------------------------------------------

So just to make clear, your Mum was Violet Eyres born 1926?

And this is likely the sister you spoke about:

Births Sep 1931
Ayres Gertrude
Mother's maiden name:Hughes,
Registered: Andover 2c 419

You can look for other Ayres births (possible siblings of your mother) here:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Just put Ayres in surname and mother's maiden name Hughes.
