I've been searching for Harrie Kerr, born 4 March 1869 (believed to be Scotland but it could have been Border country as family story said he spoke with a Scottish accent).

Harrie went to Australia where he worked as a Blacksmith. He died in Oz on 11 June 1948. He had at least the following siblings:

James Kerr (believed went to Australia)
Donald Kerr (believed went to Australia)

Kate Kerr (believed went to South Africa)
Bessie Kerr (believed went to South Africa).

Would anyone be able to help, please?

What are you trying to find out?

When did he migrate to Australia?

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 4 Feb 2013 11:00

He died in Victoria.

Trying to find out who his parents were and where Harrie was actually born.

Potty

Potty Report 4 Feb 2013 11:03

Did he marry and if so, who to? Did he have any children?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 4 Feb 2013 11:04

I doubt very much that he was actually given the name Harrie...............and there is no record of that version of the name on Ancestry

You haven't said WHEN he migrated...........

Where did you learn of his siblings, if you don't know the names of the parents?

Did he marry?

Which State did he die in? DC's are held at the State level. The DC would give the names of his parents if known

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 4 Feb 2013 11:19

I've tried Harry as well as Harrie.

I have no idea when he migrated but I do know that the names of his siblings were passed down the family. I've tried to find Harrie and Harry in the 1871 Census for Scotland and the Border counties and found a couple but nothing to tie in with the names of his siblings.

So ... do you think he could have got the supposedly Scottish accent from parents although he was born in Oz or on the journey out?

Harrie married 1st Jane Cox and had the following children, all born Euroa:
Leslie James, b 14.05.1893
Evelyn May, b 01.06.1896
Bessie Florence, b 19.07.189?
Henry Baden Powell, b 23.05.1900
Alice Catherine, b 27.08.1903

After Jane died, Harrie then married Grace Webb (nee Moore) who already had two daughters.

For those of us who don't know where it is -

Euroa is a town in the Shire of Strathbogie in the north-east of Victoria, Australia.

As Det said, his death cert should give the names of his parents. It may then be possible to find them on the census. Is his father's name on either of the marriage certs?

Either of his marriage certs would be your best bet, I would have thought

The suggestion that he was born en route to Australia doesn't 'gel' with the idea that he had sisters who went to South Africa........unless, of course, they went there from Australia

I came to the same conclusion as Gins... his name was Henry.
1st wife died in 1907
However, he is listed on all ERs as Harry.
With his 2nd wife Grace, he can be found on Ers from 1914 until at least 1939 living at:
Welshpool, Foster, Gippsland, Victoria.
