Find Ancestors

Being thick I know, but I am trying to find Francis Newby, born 1801, retired taylor on the census,married to Sarah Newby,considerably his junior, Great Yarmouth Norfolk. Well I have got him aged 70 and 80, but no idea how to work back from there. He may be married to a Mary Newby born 1796- but as he is then in Suffolk (alhtough just a few miles from where I found him last) it might not be him. Anyone else got him please, no idea what to do from here.........................

Ancestry tree.
Robert newby married elizabeth bray and had Francis 2/1/1801 died 13/2/1886.
he married mary griffiths in 1819 she was born 1793 died 1863.
francis then married 4/3/1866 to sarah Ann jacobs born 1829 died 1904.

OH thank you so much, I couldn't understand where he had gone and if it was him..... wonderful, Ineedto get back further, to find out his parents, but that is very helpful. Thank you. Oh how utterly thick of me, Inever used the ladies version of the name. Comes from having a son with the same name as his uncle, great grandfather, great great, great grandfather etc. Will try searching the wrong spelling thank you.

Oh and now his parents, wow, how do you find those things......... sorry I am very new to this, I actually did my mums side two or three years ago, and I can't remember how I did it. Thank you very much

Am finding these names wierd, I have used some from the past, and others were on my names list for my children, it is a bit spooky.

You'll find the same names often crop up in families.

My daughter-in-law chose the name Lewis for our grandson without even knowing that it was my husband's middle name. Then when I started looking into our family histories we found there were children with the name Lewis in every generation of my husband's family going back to at least 1800.

Only a week Rachel!!

I started 10 years ago after my mother died and I had time on my hands after looking after her. I spent the next 5 years in front of the computer with my family telling everyone they were on the "family history diet" because I never seemed to find time to cook - or clean or anything else for that matter, LOL.

I'm not quite so addicted these days but still come on for a short time most days even though I'm not really doing any research of my own at the moment.

Oh yes, I lost spent much more than a week in total, but I just blocked out everything else for a solid week, barely slept or anyhting, it is like a drug, so I had to stop and limit myself, hence why I hadn't started this again until now.............. hopeless isn't it. I have no idea if I will find out anything about this lot of any note, but I know where that taylors shop is, and Southtown is still mostly intact, I drive there regularly, so can visit all this at a drop of a hat. Norfolk and Suffolk must be in the blood, Ilove it here, and my children don't want to move either.................. hey ho! Somebody lost some money though, Southtown was very swish, so that might be an intersting story. One of dads side came down from (we thought) Scotland and populated the area, but I haven't found that so far.

Oh thank you so much, I can use some of these links for the other side now, you are very kind. How do I go back now and find out about Elizabeth Bray and Robert Newby Please, as I have no idea how to work back any further.................... I have tried to link up with people who have this Francis on their family trees, so maybe that will help me. This is actually quite hard isn't it, I wonder if I will have the time to devote to it. When Idid the other side I managed to find newspaper cuttings and things, is there a place to look for those, or do I just use the internet, somewhere they must be a photograph/picture/listings of the taylors premisis etc, etc................. and that is how they ended up in the Rows.......... so looks like Francis lost his own money (which is better than the others losing it I suppose). Thank you.

Hi Rachel, Mary mentioned info from trees on Ancestry. There is a subsidiary site to Ancestry called Mundia http://www.mundia.com/gb/

You have to register but it's free. You can search and view public Ancestry trees and contact the owners.

Just one thing, though - info on some Ancestry trees is unreliable as that site throws all sorts of hints at you and many people add them to their trees without checking.

Have a look round on google, Norfolk Family History Society, quite a bit coming up for Norfolk Record Office...or local Library/Archives to area...

Gorleston was in the county of Suffolk up to a certain date, then it was incorporated into Norfolk, so probably best to research both counties...
