Find Ancestors

Please help me, I'm looking for dates of birth, marriage and death of John Cox, Inn-keeper (deceased) and Eliza Cox, nee Newberry (deceased) who were present at the wedding of my grandad John Cox to Lucy Elliott Mooney on the 8th November 1897 in Glasgow. I have tried Scottish People and Genes Reunited but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a trace of them. Does anyone know where else I can look? All help very gratefully received.

When and where was John jnr born?

His parents' marriage details should be on his birth cert

Did the parents both sign as witnesses to the son's marriage?

Where did John and Lucy live. I can't find them on the 1901.

The only marriage for John Cox and Eliza Newberry is in Lanark in 1931 which is way too late for you.

I'm puzzled by the wording of the info about the parents............obviously they're deceased by now..........but if they were 'deceased' on the marriage cert, they couldn't have been 'present' .

Perhaps he means they are now deceased??

Could these 2 be possibles. Maryhill/Barony is a district of Glasgow. If this John Cox is the groom and a soldier, it may explain why they can't be found in 1901??

Thanks to all for coming back to me but it does clearly state on the statutory marriages form 644/03/0489 that I have printed off, under name, rank and profession of father that John Cox who was an Inn-keeper and Eliza Cox nee Newberry are deceased. It also says the same against the bride's father's name. Of the 4 people named under that heading the only one that is not recorded as deceased is the bride's mother.

The couple were married in the District of Dennistown (at least that's what it looks like) in the County of Lanark, their home address was 39 New Street, Glasgow.

Stuart thanks for this but John and Lucy were the bride and groom on this certificate. I have lots of detail on Lucy so thought I would have a look down John's line but have been unable to find a birth certificate for him so thought I would try and find a marriage certificate for his parents John and Eliza but am drawing a blank everywhere I try.

Could you tell us the ages of John and Lucy please and their professions? Also what are the names of her parents?

What are the details of the bride and groom?

I realise that John and Lucy are them and I was suggesting a possible pair of names, without the benefit of the certificate which you have which will detail their ages and occupations. What name is given for the living parent?

EDIT - when you say present at the wedding - do you perhaps mean that name and occupation of the fathers is listed but that then after each father's name "deceased" is written. This doesn't mean they were at the wedding?

Philip, they couldn't have been present if they were dead.

Deceased people can't attend their son's wedding..............

Alviegal, I have got Lucy on the 1911 census stating that she is 'head' of the household. On other birth certificates I have for further children Lucy had she states that she is the widow of John Cox who died in 1911, again I can't find any record of his death.

Philip - as asked, please give us the ages of the bride and groom. This is how we work.

You may well have a lot of info about Lucy but we need to build up a picture to work back from.

You have Lucy on the 1911 but we don't. Can you copy and paste that on here for us? We have no other way of seeing that without paying ourselves on Scotland's People (which we can't be expected to do).

What was John's stated occupation on the day he married?

How OLD was he?

Unless you give the info we are asking for, you can't expect us to try to help

We aren't asking exactly difficult questions!

What census, where. What age is she, what age were they when they married, what were their occupations. All these questions if answered may help us to help you find who you are looking for.
How many other children were born after John Cox died in 1911???
