Find Ancestors

Thank you Rootsgatherer, William and Cherilyn - I had a look at the links you all suggested but didn't get any further unfortunately. I hadn't realised that births less than 100 years old were not open to public scrutiny. The Blaylocks here will just have to content themselves to not knowing whether Mason Blaylock (father to Sarah and James) ever had any grandchildren. Silly as it may seem I feel sorry for Mason Blaylock his eldest son having died in his early 40's, his second son killed in WW1, his two younger children emigrating to the other side of the world and his wife dying pre 1920. All alone in his old age is not pleasant to envisage. Thank you everyone for your help in trying to resolve this.

One last-ditch attempt... I have just found on the Australian Ancestry site a reference to Annie Louisa Treuel which is apparently featured in a Blaylock Family Tree !!! So there must be a Blaylock descendent there somewhere. There is also a tree for Henry J Treuel (Annie's father) but that appears to be a private one. However I only have member of Ancestry uk and would now ask does anyone have a subscription to the Australian Ancestry or World Wide Ancestry and could look at this tree for me ? Many thanks and fingers crossed.

Annie died in 1973, so perhaps the children's names will be on her death certificate?

This may be a red herring but this man first appears on the electoral roll in 1949?

Rootgatherer - sorry for delay in replying but had to brave the cold and nip out to the shops. I do believe you may be onto something here. When I saw that William Porter Blaylock lived in McMillan district from 1949 till 1954 it rang a bell somehow, then I remembered that on the Electoral roll for Annie Louisa Blaylock she was living as follows: 1936 Flinders district, 1937 Gippsland, 1943 Gippsland, 1949/54 till 1972 McMILLAN !!!! so they obviously lived in near proximity to each other - a good chance that they were maybe mother and son. Great - at least that gives me another avenue to explore. There are a couple of people on here that have Annie in their tree. I have made contact but no response. It may well be that they are no longer members. We shall see. Thank you so much for helping me.

Yes, it was the McMillan District that drew me to it Margaret. Then I saw that Margaret had moved to La Trobe and that led me to Thomas Charnley Blaylock and Violet Elizabeth with a possible daughter Rhoda.

As rootgather said Australian death certificates have a wealth of information in them. Date of death, where, full name, occupation, sex and age., as well as cause of death.
They also contain father's name and occupation, mothers maiden name, where the deceased was born, if the deceased was married, age at marriage, and who they married. Finally it will list the deceased's children and those children's ages at the time the death occurred. So possession of the certificate will give you any children's names and from their ages you can work out their respective birth years. Of course the big drawback is the online image of the registration is currently $Au20-00 :-|

Thank you William. Have just done a quick currency conversion and it works out at about £13.00 uk currency. I think I might just treat myself to this as otherwise I will be curious for the rest of my days !!

Margaret, there are only 14 Blaylocks listed in the Whitepages (telephone directory for Australia) nationally and only 3 of these are located in Victoria, Australia. I will PM you what I have found. You may be able to make contact with either a phone call or a letter.

The person whose tree you found with Annie Louisa in it may be a descendant of one of her siblings, and just have included her husband...she had lots of brothers and sisters! Here is a death notice for one of her brothers from the Herald Sun:

'Chummy' was Gordon's nickname.

I agree, it sounds like a sad lonely life. Hopefully he did find some companionship/friendship in later life xxx

William Porter BLAYLOCK first appears on Vic electoral roll in 1914 and he died in 1957 aged 76, son of Geo & Margaret...there are some trees online that include him. Appears his wife was Margaret Irene GRAY (d. 1964 aged 84).

Thos Chas [Charnley] BLAYLOCK and Violet Eliza had a son named John Raymond who died in 1983 aged 47 in Melbourne. He appears to have been born in UK (c1905), and come to Vic via SA.

Agree best bet is a death cert...good luck, let us know if you decide to go ahead! :-)

I just want to let you know you can order a copy of Victorian certificates via the same site and download them to your computer in PDF format, its a lot cheaper and you get the copy straight away, no need to wait for it to come through the mail. The last time I ordered one I think it cost AU $17.00.

Victoria increased the price of all certificates in mid 2012. A standard official bdm certificate is now $28-60 while the PDF downloadable image (only applicable to certain historical criteria) is now $20-00. The $20-00 charge for the PDF is outrageous considering nobody lifts a finger as the process is totally automatic. Compare that to "Scotland's People" who manage to do exactly the same thing for about $1-70.

Thank you everyopne, you have all been marvellous. I have received a PM from Vanessa (which I have replied to via PM) giving me the addresses and phone numbers of all the Blaylocks in the Australian Phone directories. I am now going to either (a) write to each one individually or possibly phone them although I am not sure about this as they may consider it an intrusion. Once again thank you all very much. If I get any answers to this mystery, I will come back on here and let you all know. Thanks again.

Just this minute discovered on Ancestry that a living child of James Blaylock and Annie Louisa Treuel was 'female' - no name or year - and that she married a BURKE from which marriage there were 3 living children ! Whoopee another avenue opened. Will still compose my letters that I intend sending. Off to work in a few minutes but can't wait to start diffing later this evening.

Oh dear, another disappointment. Try as I might I cannot find the marriage in Victoria of a Somebody BURKE and a female BLAYLOCK (dau of James and Annie). I was just guessing at possible years. I guessed that the female Blaylock would have been born 1936-1942 so would possibly marry any time between the mid to late 1950's and early 1960's - and probablly alive still today. Wouldn't it be wonderful to make contact with an actual living relative. I'll keep searching for the marriage.

In Australia (all states I believe), because of privacy reasons, no birth after 1912, nor a marriage after 1952 or a death after 1985 will give you a result when searching online, as neither the event nor even any record of them having occurred, is available.

Thank you William. Seems I have spent a long time pointlessly searching for something that is not available !! So near and yet so far it seems !! My only other chance is to try and find BURKE entries in the phone book in the appropriate area and if this materialises, write to them as well as the Blaylocks I have addresses for.
