Dave, it's no secret!

The marriages and baptisms are from the West Yorkshire parish records on Ancestry.

And what about the adoption records guys any advice or is it going to be too difficult to establish?

Kay????

Kay???? Report 28 Dec 2012 21:28

Dave,

There wont be any formal records as Doroth married in 1924 as Dorothy Colley,so never legally changed her surname to Swann,it appears a surname she was known under only.

Dave

Dave Report 28 Dec 2012 21:53

Ok thanks Kay

Dave, I used Ancestry for the 1911 census. I just put in Dorothy, born Leeds and her year of birth. I didn't put in a surname as we weren't sure whether she would be Swann or Colley. She came up as Colley with her Swann adopted parents.

When you search put in Dorothy Colley born 1903 Leeds, Yorkshire and you should find her.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 28 Dec 2012 22:48

It looks like Ancestry is the only site that is fetching up the correct census for Dorothy.

I've tried Genes, FindMyPast and 1911census and none of them are finding Dorothy. I've tried census reference search and address search so Brightsolid (owners of those sites) are missing some records somewhere.

Dave, if you click on my name to send a personal message with an email address I'll send you the original image from ancestry.

Aah - found it, really bad mis-transcriptions:

SWAM, Agnes Wife Married F 38 1873 Yorkshire Leeds
CALLEY, Dorothy Adopted Daughter F 8 1903 School Yorkshire Leeds

RG number: RG14 Piece: 27099
Reference: RG14PN27099 RG78PN1550 RD500 SD5 ED8 SN134

Great I've finally found it , having put in the mis-spelted names. This is what my dad wanted to see , I think he'll be a bit emotional !! He now wants me to find Agnes Swann's sister who moved to Prestbury in Cheltenam but that's another story and I guess another separate thread, cheers everyone!

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Dec 2012 11:53

What was Agnes' sisters name?

EDIT: I really don't think Agnes had a surviving sister. According to the 1911 census Josiah Charles and Hannah Broadhead had 6 children to the marriage and stated 4 of them had died. This is what I found:-

Agnes Owen b1873 (before parent's marriage) married John Thomas Swann, alive in 1911
William b1885 married 1907 to Amelia Rhodes and alive in 1911
Charles Arthur b1875 d1895
Mary Ann b1877 d1884
Sarah Jane b1880 d1880
John Henry b1890 d1891

Do you think your dad might mean Dorothy's sister?
