Christina Report 13 Dec 2012 07:53

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I think he must have been a lot older than Elizabeth. I found a really good site, Free Reg which gave me a lot of BMDs info on St Peter & St Pauls Church Wincanton. I found a marriage of a John Humphries 1833 to an Eliza Bailey, and then a death of an Eliza before 1863. That's when John Married Elizabeth White. I found about 15 children born to him!
I think the death of John 1870 is right as he's not on the 1871 census. I found a baptism of a John 25th Dec 1816 parents were John Humphries and Mary nee Napen. Often they waited a few years before baptising the children, and 3 of their children were all baptised on the same day as a job lot!
Thanks for everyone's help,
Chris.

PM RECEIVED ...

Hi Mike,
On the "looking for ancestors" message board you let me have 1881 census for Eliza/Elizabeth Humphries b.1836 (widow,)
John b. 1864,
Elizabeth b.1868
Mary b. 1869
I wondered if you have access to earlier census as I want to see who her late husband was. I think he may have been John, and any other children they had.
The census would have been in Somerset, Wincanton area.
Thanks,
Chris.

Ok. I will sort that out for him. That will confirm Beatrice's parents.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 5 Dec 2012 20:53

Christina, I'd strongly recommend getting some certificates to ensure accuracy on the Humphries line.

Christina

Christina Report 5 Dec 2012 18:42

Thanks. I think I will try to trace the Humphries for him too. I only have John 1864(married to Susan Rumbold/Rumble) and maybe his parents,( John and Emma White married 1863 Wincanton) the dates seem to fit for them.

Christina, there's quite a bit of info to take in!

If I find anything else will post.

I have just started to make a tree for him, but I think it will take me a while. I have emailed all this on to him.

Came across this, honestly can't say if it's "our" William:

Dorset, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812

Name: William Rumbold
Event Type: Baptism
Event Date: 29 Jan 1809
Parish: Corfe Mullen
Father's Name: Edward Rumbold
Mother's Name: Hannah Rumbold

Born 27 December 1808

If (and it's only IF) that birth is right then this may be the parent's marriage:

Dorset, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812
Name: Edward Rumbald
Event Type: Banns (Bann)
Event Date: 16 Sep 1779 (NO! The other pages are 1804/5)
Parish: Corfe Mullen
Spouse's Name: Hannah Harbin

There only seems to be one Susan Rumble in Somerset according to the 1881 census so am hoping this next item is about her:

The Western Gazette 20 July 1883 reported on a Flower & Livestock show promoted by the Wincanton Church Sunday school for its scholars. A Susan Rumble won a commendation in the best doe rabbit category.

I love the bit from the Western Gazette!

Christina

Christina Report 4 Dec 2012 19:51

Just spoken to Beatrices son, who is now in his 70's and he seems to recall the name Rumble from his youth! As you say it may have been misheard.
Am printing all this so will have to sort it out. Thanks there's a lot of info here.

On 1881 census there's John aged 16 who I think was Beatrice's Father, and his mother Elizabeth aged 45 and a widow. I found a marriage of a John Humphries to an Elizabeth White in 1863 Wincanton. These must be Beatrices Grandparents I think.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 4 Dec 2012 19:41

In the Western Gazette of 1 October 1875 a Robert Rumble of Wincanton was fined 5s (inc costs) for not sending his children to school. (He was fined 2s 6d for the same thing in 1880)

Western Gazette, 2 July 1880 - Emma Rumble, wife of Robert of Wincanton, was fined 5s 6d for beating Wm Ashworth (11) with a stick. She admitted the offence but claimed he had called her names and was very saucy.

The Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette dated 4 August 1887 carried a report about the Somerset Industrial School for Boys. In it there is mention of a Robert Rumble who won a prize for "careful work throughout the year". (Possibly the son of Robert & Emma born 1876?)

MarieCeleste Report 4 Dec 2012 19:33

Normally we expect a marriage to be near the bride's birthplace but I wouldn't dismiss this for Susan's parents (would need further checking)

Dorset, England, Marriages and Banns, 1813-1921

Name: Robert Rumble - bachelor
Bann Date: 16, 23 & 30 Aug 1863
Parish: Blandford Forum
Spouse's Name: Emma Baily - spinster

Both resident in the parish.

This is a banns record, can't locate an actual marriage.
