Hi, is anyone good at deciphering handwriting? My 3x gt grandmother Elizabeth Skinner was living in Carpenters Row Liverpool on the 1841 census. The 1851 census says she was born in what looks like 'Dorby' Yorkshire & the 1861 census says Haliax Yorkshire so presume its a district of Halifax. Any help appreciated! |

For ref 1841 with son and daughter - all listed as born in county. Possibly her husband was a mariner as her son |

Hi everyone& thanks for looking! I have found a marriage for William Skinner & Elizabeth Garner in the IGI records: 7/12/1828 at St Paul's St Paul's Square Liverpool. I have also found on the same site a birth for a Eliz. Garner 4/11/1783 , daughter of Thos Garner & Jane in Barnborough Yorkshire but as yet can' t prove its her. I wonder if Barnborough is near Sowerby! - it does sound like Sorby! |

Hi lancashireAnn, this gets more confusing! I have seen Nicholas & Eliza Grundy on the 1851 census and looking again at the 1871 it does look more like Grumley. Maybe the next step is to look at the OPC site for the marriage details although I' m not sure where that will get me. Anyone any other ideas?? :-( I also have problems on the Skinner side, but that's another story .... |
