The last one is very likely, from what I've been told 'Ryan' is the family name, but when they came over from Ireland they couldn't get any work, so they tacked 'Goldsmith' onto it to sound less Irish! I also wouldn't be surprised if he father was called Thomas! |

I'm thinking that "if" the parents weren't married then maybe a story was made to cover the fact? Remember illegitimacy was something to be covered up back then if at all possible. |
