I am now 99% certain that Jane Ross ms Crawford died in 1867.

Her widower Robert Ross remarried Elzabeth Hunter in 1868.
This is the family from 1871 onwards.
Older kids James and Margaret fit perfectly and could not possibly stem from an 1868 marriage.

I can't find the family of Robert Ross and Jane Crawford anywhere!

The 29 yr old Jane Ross with other name Crawford... her death was registered in West Calder, so perhaps it wasn't her after all.

I have just double checked the marriage certificate - Margaret Ross' parents do not show as deceased when she married Samuel Watson in 1890.

Most of us here have subs that have access to transcribed census returns, but first can I confirm this... When Margaret Ross married Samuel Watson in 1890, were her parents deceased?

I think her mother Jane Ross Ms Crawford died in Midlothian in 1867 age 29.

Also, there are 3 other births on Family search ( none are after 1866 which may suggest that she did die in 1867)

Sounds like it could be the same people as Margarets marriage cert places her born 1864 (i've not got her birth cert yet).

Robert Ross was a coal miner.

Elizabeth's occupation in 1891 - Hall keeper; 1901 - Keeper of small Lab. Helen in 1901 is Hall keeper.

I wonder, GB, if the Maggie in the 1901 is the right one.

Helen Porteous is the Helen in the 1871 I posted. I discounted this because of Elizabeth's age. Elizabeth is shown as Head and Maggie as granddaughter:

My 3 or 4 x grand father had loads of grandchildren with him on one census all with surnames that I could not match up. Eventually found all the births and they were all illigetimate (sp?) to his daughters. He even registered some of the births so I knew they were right

the 1890 marriage cert shows both living in Rosewell, Midlothian.

Might be a daft question but, have you found the death cert for Margaret Stewart ms Watson and if so did the parents match the marriage cert?

I have just found two deaths for people in my own tree,to discover that both fibbed about their parents when they married.
Both named grandparents as their parents, but their children who were the informants to the deaths, provided accurate info.
Both were illegitimate females and attempted to hide it by naming grandparents.

I am wondering if she was sent to live with someone else as she was born out of wedlock. If this is the case then her age on her marriage cert is wrong.

If your Margaret's mother wasn't married when she was born her birth would be registered (and indexed) with the surname Ross. Even if the father was named and present at the registration her birth would be indexed under his name and also under Ross.
