Do as much research as you can in Oz, it'll make the UK more rewarding.
Lets look at Joseph in Ann's 27/9/12 22:13 post
Firstly, where is St Buryan - is it a parish, a chapelry in some other parish, or just some small churchless hamlet.
Normally, I look this up in Lewis (1848) A Topographical Dictionary of England http://www.british-history.ac.uk/source.aspx?pubid=445
I expected to see: BARYON (ST), a parish, in the union of Penzance... etc. However, it's not listed.
So I look it up at: http://maps.familysearch.org/ I list all the 1850s parishes in Cornwall, then add the rego district layer in the left column. (The early RDs were based on the poor law unions)
Although for 1815, it doesn't matter what the RD is, but might later on. So I check up on Penzance - I look up some event in Penzance at FreeBMD: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl Here I picked the death of some John in 1837 and got: Deaths Sep 1837 (>99%) BARNES John Penzance 9 103 etc Now if I click on the "Penzance" link, then the more info "here" link, I get to see a list of all the places in Penzance RD (incl St Buryan)
The Scottish online equivalent of Lewis is Groome (1896) Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland http://www.electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/ You can also download maps there showing parishes for any Scottish county (incl Stirling).
I can look up St Buryan at http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ It takes me to an URL that contains x=140500&y=25500 The coordinates measure the easting(x) in metres and northing(y) from the base point (100km W of Scilly Isles) [Leading zeros are dropped - so the northing has only 5 digits here] The blue grid lines are 1km apart, so if I were to guess the coords for, say, Sparnon 2km SW of St Buryan, my guess would 139800,24100 to nearest 100m.
I can go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html and enter the coords for Sparnon, then click on the oldest map in right column. It's only 1878, but fortunately the larger scale 1:2500 (abt 25" to mile) rather than 1:10560 (6" to mile).
There's another coord system used sometimes - replace the leading digit pair with a magic letter pair (so for 1,0 it's SW) and run all the remaining #s together, and drop as many as you want to get the accuracy you desire so Sparnon would be SW398241 to 100m and St Buryan church would be SW409257 - to the nearest km, St Buryan would be in the square SW4025
http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/SW4025 ============
Now for some more genological stuff. A useful resource is: https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND
Amongst the collections there are the (unindexed) images of some Cornish parish registers (incl St Buryan & St Levan). Thus, I can see the baptism record for Joseph - it doesn't name his mother as Ann Richards, but as Anne Jelbert (we're in Cornwall, not Scotland!!).
Also, for Cornwall, all the censuses thru 1891 are transcribed at http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
1851 Census Piece: HO107/1919 Place: Scilly Islands -Cornwall Enumeration District: 1d Civil Parish: St. Buryan Ecclesiastical Parish: - Folio: 418 Page: 2 Schedule: 4 Address: Sparnon -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks JELBART Joseph Head M M 35 Blacksmith Master Emp 1 Man Cornwall - St Buryan JELBART Joyce Wife M F 28 Cornwall - St Marys, Scilly Is. JELBART John Son - M 4 Cornwall - St Marys, Scilly Is. JELBART Thomas Son - M 2 Cornwall - St Buryan JELBART Everet Son - M 9m Cornwall - St Buryan CHAPPLE Priscilla Servnt U F 15 General Servant Cornwall - St Levan I like their display - it's nice to copy and paste into my notes - also I can click thru adjacent h/h's easily Also 1901's free somewhere, I've never looked where.
For Lancs, 2 very useful resources are: http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/ and http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ Even if you've found a BMD in the GRO index, it's worth checking LancsBMD - e.g.,
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1861 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference OLDHAM Sarah Jane Colne Preston COL/39/28
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1865 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference OLDHAM Joshua Burnley Preston THORNS BU/70/29
As you see, difft info is indexed - for Bs & Ds, it gives the subdistrict within Burnley RD where the event was rego'ed. Also, they're currently retro-fitting the mum's MS=Maiden Surname to the index. (They've gotten to 1877 for Burnley subdistrict, but they've not started on Colne yet). Also, they index age at death pre-1866 For marrs they index by entry #, so one knows who wed whom pre-1912
FreeCEN also has transcribed all of the county of Stirling for 1841-1851, but nothing later.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm Saint Ninians C114881 1855-1867 M114881 1855-1875 C114882 1643-1687 M114882 1643-1687 C114883 1868-1875 M114887 1688-1754 1774-1870 C114884 1688-1731 M114888 1820-1866 C114885 1731-1783 M114889 1707-1804 C114886 1783-1819 M195342 1646-1664 C114888 1820-1854 C195321 1731-1783 C195341 1690-1727 C195342 1644-1687
Batch #s can be usefil on FS to limit your search to one parish for a particular time-frame. Unless there are a large # of events (like a city, or regos that go back a long way, like here), a Scottish batch # will take the form C11pppn for a C of S christening, or M11pppn for a C of S marr. ppp is the parish #, so 488=St Ninians, n=1/3 refer the the GROS index, so range is 1855-1875ish. Higher #s are newer.
