WoodfortheTrees Report 22 Sep 2012 17:29

That sounds really interesting, I'll have to have a look at that. Thank you for all your help

Just read the obituary and this is definately our relative as Marion Fisher is my MIL's sister. Thanks very much for posting this, I found it really fascinating to read.

If you google Whetstone Medicine Hat you'll find an obit for Mrs. Violet Helene Worth, maiden name Whetstone born 3 March 1908, Maple Creeek, Saskatchewan. Iit gives parents' names as David & Catherine. She had a brother Dave and sister Marjorie. She was 103!

Flip - check the forenames on your posted GRO marr index.

http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/index.jsp
1911 Census of Canada
Home / 1911 / Saskatchewan / Moose Jaw / 110 Townships 13 / page 11 split view
1 154 Whetstone David M Head M Dec 1876 35
2 154 Whetstone Sarah F Wife M Sep 1874 33
3 154 Whetstone Marjorie F Daughter S Sep 1902 9
4 154 Whetstone David M Son S Dec 1907 4
5 154 Whetstone Violet F Daughter S Mar 1908 3
6 154 Stone Arthur M Brother-in-law S Aug 1885 26

The split view accesses:
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/1911/pdf/e002099538.pdf
[addy=T15 R26 W3M - obviously an enumerator typo for W2M]

http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/Test6.jsp?province=Saskatchewan
If you are not familiar with the township and range system the Saskatchewan Towns Alphabetical Listing on this site gives the township and range and map for many towns.
Moose Jaw 16 26 w of the 2nd

For the same purpose, but Canada-wide, I often use:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/post-offices/index-e.html
Moose Jaw gets Sec.32, Twp.16, R.26, W2 - 1907-04-29
Maple Creek Sec.15, Twp.11, R.26, W3 (W3, so way W of Moose Jaw - almost in AB)

The Township # is a northing (from the US border) and the Range # is (usually) a westing # from the named meridian.
The 2nd meridian is the SK-MB border in the extreme north - down S, it's on the SK side of the border.
The units used are 6 mile chunks, so this identifies a 36 sq m township block.
The 36 sections in a block are numbered in a fixed order - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_Land_Survey
A homesteader could get a letters patent (i.e., title) to a quarter section (160 acres) by paying a $10 filing fee, living on the land for 3 y, erecting a dwelling and getting 30ac under crop.

Dave says he's a farmer in 1911, so I would check:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/western-land-grants/index-e.html

We get a weird hit:
Part Section Township Range Meridian [all blank]
Reference:
Volume: 557
Folio: 193
Microfilm reel number: C-6380
Names: David Whetstone
Remarks: Unverified record: name, liber and folio numbers were found in the nominal index (aperture card books 1-36), but the record has yet to be matched to a homestead description.

Search help gets
LIBER DATES REEL NUMBER
557 June 11, 1913 - June 16, 1913 C-6380

Now the popn growth on the prairies was explosive in the 1900s, so it was decided to have censuses every 5 y for the 3 prairie provinces (AB, SK, MB).
I don't see them at:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census06/

Searching 1916's a bit too geeky to post - so go to:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1916/001100-100.01-e.php
Search for District=Maple Creek subdistrict #=19
You want page 7 of 29
The family's on Maple St in Maple Creek - note David has a "C" in col 4.
This indicates David isn't actually at home, but he's off serving somewhere in Canada - in this case, Camp Hughes, one of the main training camps in Canada.
The same also applies for Arthur Stone in the next h/h

Obviously, I next check for their attestation images (David on 11/2/1916, Art on 29/3/16):

Name: WHETSTONE, DAVID ERNEST
Regimental number(s): 252275
Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 10272 - 32
Date of Birth: 14/12/1876
Attestation paper: Front of form - Back of form

Name: STONE, ARTHUR WILLIAM
Regimental number(s): 252645
Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 9352 - 71
Date of Birth: 29/08/1885
Attestation paper: Front of form - Back of form

Then I'ld (you really) check SK BMDs for David's kids.
Later D's and all marrs aren't indexed online yet.

A tree on A* has Violet's birth 3/3/1906, with her father as David, but it doesn't have the right mother (dpwn as Catherine Stone, not Sarah). It gives David's death as Medicine Hat, but with no dates.

Edit, thanks for pointing out her name was Sarah Catherine, must read what I post :-D

Thankyou Flip this branch of my family is proving to be a difficult one to trace

Flip

Flip Report 20 Sep 2012 16:33

Not all overseas deaths were recorded, or are available on-line, especially if they were lost without trace. Who knows what he faced in his military career, but there's no record of him on National archives either.

Thankyou for trying Flip yes sometimes the ancestors can be most uhelpful but still wondering what happened to William Whetstone

Flip

Flip Report 20 Sep 2012 14:30

Well, tried tracing David/Mary Ann through to 1911 census to see how many children born & still living - but no use, they have put married 40 years but just put a cross in the bit about children. These ancestors can be quite inconsiderate!

Hello - I've looked for his service records already (usually one of my first things to check!) and I'm not finding anything. The only record for that name (or variants) was a lad born 1880 in Leeds who enlisted 1897.
