Thanks Quoy you're a star! Yes I found Samuel Crickett last night , I agree he must be a brother , I now know their father was Samuel as well.
The Amelia Baptism, the site is queering my email........ You don't know if there was Mother's maiden name on that? I believe it has her as Eleanor, Catholic for Helen.

I think Joseph is a Carpenter, and it's not dittoed down the list. There do seem to be ditto marks (") next to his 15 y.o. daur, but they're not like the definite ditto marks in the religion & pob cols. NB Canada East=Quebec

Sylvia, That's what I thought, although I didn't phrase it correctly before!
I remember it now, if a woman was referred to with her own christian name plus her married name, it meant that..... she was widowed!
If AJ were her own initials she was widowed. If AJ were her husband's initials, she was married
In relation to the article re Alfred and Nellie, that info was evidently gleaned from the wreath that they sent

Just one note re how to address married women, widows
Up until the 1960s, etiquette manuals dictated that a married woman should be referred to by her husband's name or initials ...............
.... this applied whether she was with him, or attending an event without him
so Mrs A J Barber is the wife of A. J. Barber, and the way that newspaper report is phrased, with a comma between Alex Barber and Mrs A J, indicates that she is NOT Alex's wife
"Deceased's son Alec Barber, Mrs A J Barber" ( daughter in law)"
The etiquette for widows differed slightly ........ most people still referred to them with the husband's initials, but it was almost equally correct to refer to them by their own initials.
I can remember having very elderly female friends and relatives in the 1960s and 70s who were very upset when they received letters addressed to Mrs Edith Smith ............ they were so used to being Mrs J A Smith!

I think this might be Alexander jnr in 1861 - the occupation of the chap at the top looks like Corporal and it's been dittoed down the list:

I think there is an error on the birth year on this record:
British Army Service Records 1760-1915 Transcription
First name(s): Alexander Last name: BARBER Calculated year of birth: 1856 < No, this is wrong! Parish of birth: Nova Scotia Town of birth: Nova Scotia County of birth: North America Age at attestation: 21 years 6 months Attestation date: 9 December 1877 NO! - that's the date he was discharged!! Attestation corps: Attestation soldier number: Discharge rank: Corporal Discharge corps: 4th Battn 60th Of Royal Rifles Discharge soldier number: 387
The National Archives reference: WO97 / 1880 / 151
The record gives details of his service from 1857 to 1877 so no way was he born 1856!
He'd served for 21 years including 2.5 in Cephalonia, 1.5 in Gibraltar, 1.5 in the Crimea and 4 years in Canada.
His trade had been a musician and upon discharge December 1877 he was going to 4 Pimlico Road, London.

This does not necessarily mean that Alec and Mrs A.J were husband and wife..
