Hi my name is Rita and i am helping my husband Neil to trace his family tree.
We know that his grandfather was William Pittaway born 1880 and died 1967.
William was adopted from Jersey by his aunt Louisa Fryer nee Pittaway we think he was between 4 and 10. We also know that his father was Henry Pittaway born 1849 and that he was in Cambridge Barracks in the 1871 census. We really need help to find out when and why Henry went to Jersey, did he get married if so to whom, then what happened to William's mother and Henry that meant William had to be adopted.

If Henry was in the army, then he could have been doing a spell of duty on Jersey, and met his wife/partner over there.

Where was Henry born?

Droitwich but it keeps getting mistranscribed.

I have been looking through the Jersey birth indexes but no luck so far. The parishes that I have checked I've also searched for just christian names, William Joshua Francis is quite a mouthful so should stand out.

I won't be able to look again until next week - family arriving for a visit later today.

Tree on Ancestry states William Henry Pittaway and Elizabeth Mary le Boutillier had 2 daughters Alice, Sarah and William Joshua Francis Pittaway 20/6/1879 - 19/2/1967 married Emma Parker 29/7/1906 and had 8 children.

Don't know how correct this info is but no dates or place of birth for parents or where William Joshua was born.
Although I think the Boutillier could be from Jersey!!

That's interesting I'll follow it up next week. The name should be Le Boutillier, a very common local name.

If William and Elizabeth did marry the likelihood is that it was in Jersey.

The person who submitted the Ferger/Fryer correction is called Jeanne. Does that name mean anything to you?

Louisa seems to be a saint! In 1911 she is a widow and has a widowed daughter in law and a grandson living with her. Grandson was there in 1901 so looks like she brought him up too!
