I am trying to trace my grandfather and his family before him on his MARKINSON side.
His name was Gordon Richard MARKINSON b9/12/1900 - 1971 and his father before him was George Markinson. George was a horse trader from Highbury in Islington, London. That's as much as we know of him.
Gordon had a brother Frederick who served in the Green Howards during WWII and was killed in action. There was also a sister, Rosemary Markinson who was also killed along with the rest of the Markinson family during the Blitz.
Gordon was married to my grandmother Nora Reddington in july - Sept 1945. Nora was originally from Co.Mayo, Ireland and born in 1913. It is from here my family originate.
It is believed that Gordon may have had a family back in London to a marriage he held whilst married to Nora Reddington for which he served a 2 year prison sentence somewhere between 1947 - 1950.
Is it possible to access prison records to see if there are any further details for name changes as a result of this? Name changes be the result of not being able to find anything for the above in which case I will never find ancestors on this side.
Gordon claimed his mother had connections with and family originations in France.
There is a birth record for John Frederick Markinson born 1896 Leeds, Yorkshire, but I cannot access these records as yet so cannot see what info this contains.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Welcome to the boards.
Does this mean you don't have your grandfather's birth certificate?
What about his marriage cert?

So where has the information about the father being George Markinson, a horse trader from Highbury, come from.
How do you know that a brother and sister died in WW2

Nothing is adding up at the moment.
Only the marriage and death in that name. Strange that he married at age 45 ish so might have been a previous marriage.
So back to square one as to where the information on father, brother and sister came from

GB, why don't you think George is his father? There's no Gordon in the 1911 (or the 1901 for that family).

Tried to approach this from a different angle in case father died when he was young and mother married a Markinson but no joy with that at the moment
Births Jun 1900 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dancey Gordon Richard Pancras 1b 154
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Sep 1900 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Avery Gordon Richard E Plymouth 5b 210 Gayfer Gordon Richard Mutford 4a 1080 Pellant Gordon Richard St. Albans 3a 705
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Sep 1901 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BARCLAY Gordon Richard Edmonton 3a 599
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Dec 1901 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUTHERWOOD Gordon Richard Brentford 3a 188
Ruled all of those out as deaths can be found in those names
Really need some feedback from the poster as to where the information on other family members came from
