Find Ancestors

I am trying to trace the family history of my mother's family, the Tighe family of Edinburgh. Her name is Marion Annette Tighe and her father's name was Charles Mather Tighe (born 1900, died 1975). Her mother was Mary Cairns (born 1903, died 1961). Charles' father's name was Francis (1858-1934) and his father was Terence (c1832 - death unknown date). These last two are a bit sketchy and could be firmed up (or disputed). If you have any family connections or have come across the family in your research I would be grateful for any help you can offer.

Terence b.1865 16 Aug.

should be on 1871 census.

So far cannot locate Marriage of Terence and Jane McKeon.

Plenty of variation on the transcription of Surname.. also Teague..however Janes surname seems to be consistant so far..!

It would maybe be worth looking at Francis McKEAN (relative) aged 16 living with Terence and family 1881 census...possibly a brother of Jane (deceased)


William McGrath (1881 census) was the husband of Elizabeth Tighe..

Thanks to all for digging up these details. Looks like I need to look at Ireland for older history since Terence Tighe is reported to have come over from Ireland in the Census. Can anyone help me with this?

Great, but Terence J Tighe is what I have - born 1832 but this is from the Census so is not exactly reliable.

I think my grandfather may have been your grandfather's brother.
His name was James Tighe and I know he had brothers called Charlie, Billy Harry and Terry and sisters called Jeanie and Sarah.
My mother who is 90 and has failing memory, tells me that Charlie married a lady called Mary Cairns. :-)

I have just spoken to my mum again and she tells me Charlie lived in Craigmillar/Niddrie and was the pond master at Dalry swimming baths. Does this like it might be your grandfather?

I am still researching and yes your information is right, Charlie was the pond master at Dalry baths. I have photos of him there in the 1920 / 30s!
