Yes it is possible they were searching for him for some days, but there would have been many mines both active and inactive to cover...miners were often solitary men, or just had the wanderlust and caught goldfever!!! If you do get the certificate it would be interesting to find out how much info is on it.

I always recommend Joy Murrin's transcription service as it seems better value to me. One block of info is $9 and 2 is $12. An example of what is in one block on a death cert is: marriage place, age at marriage, spouse, children. Another is: age, birthplace, time in colony. Assuming that info is there of course, that should be enough to determine if it is your man. (Since parents aren't listed on the NSW bdm site I'd say they are not on the registration.) Anyway, let us know what you decide!

It does say that the shaft was abandoned; even though it was only 20ft. deep. It may have been hard to get to him.

sometimes you just need the certificate, I think we have found all that can be found and it will prove either way?

sounds more like he fell in the well and it took them that long to find him?
if he was a miner he may have been gone for days at a time.

It is sad that you could be missing for a week and nobody noticed you were gone!

I get the feeling that if that is Michael, he may have either run out on Rosina and given himself a new identity, or he wanted to disappear because of something he may have done that could get himself in trouble with the law!

Either way, he must've been a loner.

Wife Henrietta died in 1902. Might explain why he married again a few times, as women to take care of him and his children! They were living at 73 Carlton Cres, Summer Hill at the time. He is stated as late of Guernsey so perhaps that is where the older children were born.

A Mr & Mrs Bullock with 4 children arrived in Sydney in Sept 1888 aboard Orizaba from London.

Rosina's funeral notice (Sydney Morning Herald, 13 May 1919) states her full name as Rosina Christina Bullock, late of 55 Kensington Rd, Summer Hill. It appears she died at Western Suburbs Cottage Hospital; she was 52.

Sorry can't find Michael J's death but susepct he may be the Joseph that Gins found. Newspaper report:

The body of a miner, Mr. Joseph Quinton, was found yesterday at Tingha, at the bottom of an abandoned shaft 20 ft. deep. He had been missing for a week, and death was due to drowning.

They met and were married when he was in England recuperating from injuries he suffered whilst fighting in France.

That last entry is rather confusing.

Rupert married Jessie Frances Cocklin in 1914. I'm not sure where the name 'Florence' comes from.

I also found newspaper court records from 1912 of Rupert having to face court over a criminal assault.
