I don't have a newspaper sub either. I access British 19th Century Newspapers via Lancashire Libraries.
Jonesey's thread on the Genealogy Chat board explains how......

To MC, W and C - I really appreciate your interest in my wayward rellies and just want to say a HUGE thank you - It gets more interesting every day I could not have found all this info out myself. For one, I dont have Newspaper sub and like Wendy I also have subs for several other sites.
I tend to agree with the idea that Thomas R Kemp did not know about these dodgy dealings.
My connection with all these scallums is this :-
Thomas Reginald Kemp and Esther Nesbitt had 7 children - Thomas Richardson, Reginald Llewellin, our Louisa Adalaide Horneman, Alfred Charles Holmes, Edward Owen, Amelia Crossthwaite and Arthur Wilde.
Louisa's sister Amelia Crossthwaite Kemp" married "my grt uncle Henry Clark Lewis - and there lies some more mysteries - there is no record of a marriage for them and they had 0ne gaughter Gladys Muriel Kemp/Lewis. she goes on to marry Edward Hector McKay. Henry disappears after 1881 but his death is recorded in Germany according to his probate records.
Louisa's brother Frederick Nesbitt Kemp married Eleanor Lewis who's own father James Henry Frederick Lewis ( my gr grt grandfather ) had 2 families on the go at the same time - my gr grtt grandmother Mahala Lewis and Elizabeth Maddison - amnesia must run in the family !
Many of the the Kemps and Lewis's were solicitors, auditors, Barristers, Architects and surveyors and there are several items connected to them in Old Bailey on line.
I think they were all scally wags ducking and diving - if you are confused look at my WALKER TREE on ancestry.
Just thought I would throw this in for you to digest !
Keep the info coming and I will let you know if I find anything else.
Thanks again everyone :-D

Yes it has got to be them. You and Christina are gradually pushing me into a paying for a sub for British Newspapers Archive! I already have GR, Ancestry and FMP but I don't have any other vices these days so I am now tempted to pay up and see what I can find

Hmmm
The Era - Sunday 20 March 1853 "Provincial Theatricals" CORK - Queen's Royal Theatre
The following ladies and gentleman are at present engaged: - List of actors and actresses currently playing there include - Mr Alfred Howell, Theatre Royal, Gloucester Miss Julia Maitland, Theatre Royal, Coventry
3d gallery, 6d pits, 1s upper circle and 2s dress circle.
Got to be them hasn't it? There are quite a few reviews in other editions of a "Miss Maitland" who was a promising new actress, lovely looking and with a sweet voice.
Perhaps Alfred leaving the country was just to Ireland. However, that NY shipping record may have been "artiste".

Plus you can look at some of his work in Google images. It does say he was a Captain but I think he said he was a Major when he married Catherine. It also says that his father bought most of his commission

Robert Westmacott was also an artist but I'm not sure that is the connection

Rosie, this was really one to get our teeth into - I bet there's more waiting to be uncovered.
I'm not 100% sure that those NY records are "your" Alfred Howell (I did say underneath the post that I wasn't saying they were him). There were actually a few chaps of that name around the same time so we can't be sure. The newspaper articles implied that it may have been in the 1850's. If that was the case he was back in 1860 to marry Louisa, and he was conducting business with her father in late 1850s.
I really can't believe that Mr Kemp was unaware of the shenanigans that had gone on, so why did he let his daughter marry such a bounder? Must be another story in there!

WELL DONE GUYS - Youv'e really gone to town - thank you , thank you, thank you - my fellow rellie found an article about Catherine Julia Holyoake who married Edward Ward and 6 months later she left him to live with Alfred Howell. He later changed his name to Maitland.
I have just had a quick glance at all your posts and it certainly looks as if she was a bit of a scally wag - well, all of them ! I
In the marriage record for Catherine Holyoake to Edward Ward it says under their names that both parties had been previously married in New York so the passenger lists fit in with them.
Another interesting thing is that you say that you thought that Alfred Howell was an artist in the passenger records - Robert Hopke Reed (Louisa's 2nd husband ) was a professor of music and his daughters by his first marriage were singing and artist teachers so I'm sure they all knew each other. Roberts brother Thomas German Reed and his wife Priscilla were in the theatrical business and are mentioned in the Biography records on ancestry - is there a connection here with Catherine being an actress - I'm sure they all knew each other.
I'll read all your info thoroughly now and get back to you - thank you again everyone - its becoming very interesting reading - I love skeletons in the cupboard !! :-D

I think you're right Christina. Mary Ann Woolley that she was visiting also was born in Redditch I found her marriage hoping for a clue in her maiden name but she was Mary Ann Thomason, so no clue there

This one says he's an artist, so not sure:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 Name: Alfred Howell Arrival Date: 21 Aug 1854 Birth Year: abt 1814 Age: 40 Gender: Male Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: English Place of Origin: England Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Destination: England Port of Arrival: New York Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Ship Name: Baltic
.. or there's this, occupation looks like "customer" but can't be:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Alfred Howell Arrival Date: 6 Dec 1851 Birth Year: abt 1810 Age: 41 Gender: Male Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: English Place of Origin: England Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Destination: England Port of Arrival: New York Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Ship Name: America
(Not saying that either of those are him)

Have just read another, very long (about a full newspaper page), article in "North Devon Journal - Thursday 10 November 1870" about the whole affair.
It mentions that Catherine's connection with Maitland was summarily severed as he was compelled to quit the country having set it's laws at defiance.
Whilst Catherine was with Maitland she took to the stage and gained some notoriety and was very popular with playgoers in Birmingham.
Once she'd got her claws into Westmacott she accompanied him to the Crimea and served as an assistant to Florence Nightingale !!!!!!
When Westmacott realised she was already married (conveniently forgetting he had a wife and kids in Australia) he took advice, realised he could not legally live with her so waged a campaign of bitter letters to her family saying he'd been deceived. The paper says "the domestic relations of the parties concerned became somewhat complicated" (I'll say).
Her first husband, Edward Ward, was advised that she was guilty of robbery, perjury, adultery and bigamy. It was suggested that if proceedings took place in the Divorce Court "several gentlemen occupying high positions in society will be brought forward".
To say she was "a bit of a girl" was putting it mildly (trollop).
So, we know Maitland legged it abroad, but where?

Found another version of the newspaper article from 1870. This time it says that Catherine was 'at present residing in Liverpool'.
Could this be her? If it is, she has shaved almost 20 years off her age. Her occupation is.... 'Lady' - er, I don't think so!
1871 England Census Name: Catherine Westinacott Age: 31 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1840 Relation: Visitor Gender: Female Where born: Redditch, Warwickshire, England Civil parish: Everton Ecclesiastical parish: St Peter County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Registration district: West Derby Sub-registration district: Toxteth Park ED, institution, or vessel: 26 Household schedule number: 46 Piece: 3813 Folio: 7 Page Number: 7 Household Members: Name Age John Woolley 39 Mary Ann Woolley 30 Ann Woolley 10 Jane Woolley 7 Catherine Westinacott 31
Still can't find the elusive Mr Howell/Maitland.
