I am seeking any information regarding George Coles, who was my grandfather. Areas would be Hampshire/ portsmouth he was born approx 1895 give or take a few years. Died approx 1930. My gran was stella jane Edyvane. but she was married to Arthur Evans in 1916, and had George Evans 19 years after. My mother was Doreen H F Coles, born 1927 dec 21 in Plymouth Devon. But before the birth of George Evans in 1935 ( my uncle ) she had my mother doreen Coles. 1927. My gran was not married to George Coles as I have tried to find the marriage details. All I know of G Coles is he was in the Navy and served on HMS Hood and other ships in the war, which he survived, he actually went a little crazy after the war and went into an institution.. all a big mystery, and my mother does not remember him, any help would be appreciated, also he had 3-4 children whom my grand mother helped to bring up.. |

HMS Hood was commissioned on 20/5/1920 so was not involved during WW1 (1914~1918). If your grandfather died about 1930 he could not have served on her during WW2 (1939~1945). She was sunk on 24/5/1941 with the loss of 1,415 lives. There were only 3 survivors, Midshipman William Dundas, Able Seaman Bob Tilburn and Ordinary Signalman Ted Briggs. |

All of the deaths in the Portsmouth area for a George Coles were for men older than you think "your" George Coles was:- |

There are a number of sites about the Hood, this being one of them: |

Are you assuming George was about the same age as Stella Jane as she was born 1894? He may, of course, have been quite a bit older (or younger) than Stella. >> I was thinking he was older than her. |

There is an extensive list of crew members between 1920 and 1941. There was a George D Cole and a W G Cole who were lost in the sinking of the ship in 1941. There was a J Coles served 1923/4 and a W H Coles at the same time. |

It seems like surnames could be changed easily back in those days which is obviously what my gran did with my uncle, probably to save face, as they did in those days..poor uncle seems to have had 3 surnames in his life..but according to records his real father was named Evans. |
