The National Archives have launched a new search engine "Discovery" - see
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/search/advanced-search

with search criteria that are similar to those now in general use.

Putting in just "Zouch", and choosing a date range from just before John's possible birth of 1450 to 100 years later (so as to catch any wills etc), achieves 151 hits.

An interesting one is the second hit, a case dating from 1515 to 1518, between the parties "Cicely Zouch (Sowche), daughter of John, late Lord Zouch v James Fitzjames and James Gilbert". The defendants were the surviving executors of the late Lord Zouch and the plaintiff's case is that they had refused to assign her lands in Northamptonshire left to her by her father.

It is these types of cases that often offer the richest source of genealogical information for the periods before the 1550s.

However, I see from this site:

that Cicely's siblings do not include a Henry Zouch.

Thank you Ann for your efforts. However, (not to be ungrateful) it's really the gap between 1490 and the latest of those you have listed, which I think is a death in 1351 or thereabouts, so there are still 100+ years adrift.. There is always the possibility that the name for my line came about through working for the de la Zouch/ /la Zouch/ Zouch family, and unless I can break through I guess I shall never know.

Ivy, thank you also for suggesting these other sources. If I'm very lucky I might find some connection through them. Had I still been mobile I would have made many trips to Kew and probably Ashby and other places they were connected with. As it is, my research has to be on-line and I rely on good people like yourselves to put suggestions my way.
